A promising all-rounder from New Zealand, Jimmy Neesham is one of those utility players who have made his presence felt in the international circuit with his all-round performances. Rising into prominence as a skilful all-rounder in the 2010 U-19 World Cup, Neesham started taking rapid strides at the international level.

Starting his professional career as a domestic cricketer for Auckland, Neesham moved to Otago and was an instant success there. He made a sensational impact with both bat and the ball in the 50-over format for the 2011-12 season. He had a decent run with the bat and also picked up career-best figures of 5-44 against Wellington.

He was the star performer for the Otago Volts in the 2013 Champions League and was instrumental in leading them to several victories in the group stages of the tournament. Over the years, and ever since making his international debut, Neesham has been an impact player for the Kiwis and has impressed all and sundry with his all-round attributes.

Jimmy Neesham T20I Career

Jimmy Neesham made his T20I debut for New Zealand against South Africa at Durban on December 21, 2012. His start in the shortest format was relatively quiet, but he gradually evolved into a valuable middle-order all-rounder known for his power-hitting and handy medium-pace bowling.

Over the years, Neesham became a regular contributor in crunch situations, especially with the bat during the death overs. His ability to clear the ropes and chip in with key wickets made him a utility option for the Kiwis. He was a member of New Zealand’s squad that finished as runners-up in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, further cementing his role in the format.

A major milestone in his T20I career came on March 26, 2025, when Neesham picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 Internationals against Pakistan. He registered impressive figures of 5/22 from four overs, becoming only the second New Zealand bowler to take a five-wicket haul against Pakistan in T20Is.

In January 2026, due to his regular performances as a T20 freelancer, Neesham was also named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, highlighting his continued relevance in the format.

Jimmy Neesham ODI Career

Making his ODI debut on January 19, 2013, against South Africa in Paarl, Jimmy Neesham quickly established himself as a dependable all-rounder in the limited-overs setup, capable of playing match-defining knocks and providing crucial breakthroughs with the ball.

One of the standout moments of his ODI career came on January 3, 2019, against Sri Lanka, when Neesham smashed 34 runs in a single over, including five sixes — the most runs scored by a New Zealand batsman in one over in ODI cricket.

During the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Neesham reached the milestone of 50 ODIs in New Zealand’s opening match of the tournament.

In the same World Cup, he delivered a memorable performance against Afghanistan, claiming his first five-wicket haul in ODIs and completing 50 wickets in the format. Neesham also played a vital role in the semi-final against India, taking the catch to dismiss Dinesh Karthik, which sealed New Zealand’s place in the final. He was an integral part of the squad that finished runners-up in the tournament, narrowly missing out on lifting the World Cup.

Post the World Cup, where the Kiwis lost a heartbreaking final, Neesham posted a poignant tweet reading, “Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy.”

Although the allrounder has been playing ODIs regularly for the Blackcaps, and represented them in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Jimmy Neesham Test Career

The Kiwi all-rounder, Jimmy Neesham, made his Test debut against India in 2014 and announced himself in spectacular fashion by scoring an unbeaten 137. This knock remains the highest score by a No. 8 batsman on Test debut. He followed it up with another century in his second Test against the West Indies, becoming the first New Zealand cricketer to score centuries in his first two Test matches.

Despite his strong start in Test cricket, Neesham found opportunities limited in the longest format due to team combinations and competition for places. However, his early Test performances showcased his temperament and ability to perform at the highest level.

His exploits in Test cricket and limited-overs formats also helped him secure contracts in major T20 leagues, including the Indian Premier League, where he played for Delhi Daredevils and later Kolkata Knight Riders. While his international career has seen its share of ups and downs, Jimmy Neesham remains widely regarded as a fearless all-rounder who thrives on big moments and high-pressure situations.
