The Indian prodigy who couldn’t quite flourish at home but found new light abroad— Unmukt Chand’s story is one of courage, reinvention, and unbroken love for the game.

Born on March 26, 1993, in Uttarakhand, Unmukt Chand was once seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket— a stylish right-handed opener with a silken cover drive and a temperament beyond his years. His moment of glory came early, when he led India’s Under-19 team to the World Cup title in 2012, scoring a breathtaking unbeaten 111 in the final against Australia. That innings, filled with calm assurance and clean hitting, made him an overnight sensation— hailed as India’s future captain and the next Dravid in the making.

But cricket, like life, doesn’t always follow the script. Despite promising stints with Delhi in domestic cricket and appearances for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Rajasthan Royals, and Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Chand’s career never quite reached the heights it promised. Consistency eluded him, and with opportunities shrinking, the golden boy of 2012 slowly faded from the Indian cricketing landscape.

Then came a twist few could have imagined. In August 2021, at just 28, Unmukt made a bold decision— to retire from Indian cricket and start afresh in the United States. Leaving behind the system that made him famous, he sought a new beginning in a land where cricket was still finding its feet. And there, he rediscovered his spark. Playing for the Silicon Valley Strikers in Minor League Cricket, Chand topped the run charts in his debut season, guiding his team to the title and reminding the world of the talent that once lit up Australia’s skies.

His success opened unexpected doors. In 2022, he became the first Indian male cricketer to play in the Big Bash League, representing the Melbourne Renegades. Later, he featured in the Bangladesh Premier League for Chattogram Challengers, and then joined the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the inaugural Major League Cricket season, where his presence gave the young American setup a much-needed touch of class and experience.

Beyond the numbers, Unmukt’s journey reflects something deeper— the resilience to begin again when the world stops believing. From being a teenage hero in India to a pioneer in American cricket, his path has been anything but ordinary. Off the field, he has also built a reputation as a commentator and writer. His book, The Sky is the Limit, captures the essence of his story— the early fame, the setbacks, and the rebirth of a cricketer who refused to let go of his dream.

Today, Unmukt Chand stands as a symbol of reinvention— a reminder that sometimes, dreams do come true, just not where you first imagined them. He may never have become the star Indian cricket once envisioned, but in his second innings across the ocean, Unmukt has written a story far more meaningful — one about hope, self-belief, and the power of starting over.
