Ryan Jay Sidebottom

Hailing from Huddersfield, Ryan Jay-Sidebottom is an accurate left-arm seamer, instantly recognisable with his distinctive hairstyle. A former England international, Ryan helped Nottinghamshire to County Championship titles in 2005 and 2010 which also re-booted his international career.

Sidebottom made his debut for England in 2001 at the Lord’s against Pakistan. However, his debut was a forgettable one as he went wicketless in that match. He sustained an ankle injury in 2003 and then found it difficult to force his way back into the side. Dropped from the national squad, Ryan continued to impress in the domestic circuit and another 50-wicket season for Nottinghamshire in 2006 reminded the England hierarchy of his skills. 

He would remain a regular in the Test side until 2009, playing a total of 22 Tests and claiming 79 wickets.  His performances in 2007 saw him named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year for 2008. On March 8th, 2008, he took the 37th Test cricket hat-trick in his 11th match for England against New Zealand, becoming the 11th English player to do so. After a very fruitful 2008, Ryan was named England’s 'Player of the Year'.

The Yorkshire bowler spearheaded England’s bowling attack in the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup. He took ten wickets in the tournament as England won the final against Australia at Barbados in May to lift the coveted trophy. Sidebottom retired from all forms of international cricket in September 2010 on a high note but continued to play in the domestic circuit until 2017 scalping over 1000 wickets.
