Callum Ferguson

Once regarded as the future of the Australian batting line-up but unfortunately, Callum Ferguson had to wait until the age of 32 to be called to get the baggy green. 

Ferguson emerged through the age-group cricket and was selected in the initial squad for the Under-19 World Cup of 2004 but a knee injury occurred at a very bad time and he had to miss the biennial event. Although, the Adelaide-born made his domestic debut in the 2004-05 season and became a fulcrum of the South Australia team. 

The world saw the first glimpse of Ferguson in an ODI clash against New Zealand in 2009 and later played limited-overs series against South Africa, Pakistan, and England, before donning the Australian jersey during the Champions Trophy of 2009. However, another knee injury kept Ferguson away from the sport for the next two years. He played a couple of 50-over games in 2011 but could make it into the World Cup squad. 

Although injuries could not keep Ferguson away from cricket. He piled up thousands of runs from 2011 to 2015 to prove his utility to the national selectors and they couldn’t ignore him more. The South Australian cricketer was brought in the national team for the second Test against visiting South Africa in 2016. However, scores of 3 and 1 dropped Ferguson from the next Test and a poor following season shut all the doors and windows for the batter. 

Apart from being irregular in the national setup, Ferguson has provided his services in the Indian Premier League, Big Bash, and English County. The batter has established himself as a seasoned campaigner in the T20 leagues. He has led Sydney Thunder for two years, before leaving the club after the BBL|10. 

In 2020, Ferguson retired from the First-Class format but stated he remains keen to continue playing one-day cricket for South Australia. The following year, the Australian was drafted into the Northern Superchargers squad for the inaugural edition of the Hundred.
