Tanush Kotian

In an era where flamboyance often overshadows grit, Tanush Kotian has built his reputation the old-fashioned way — through persistence, discipline, and consistency. The Mumbai all-rounder has quietly emerged as one of the most dependable performers in India’s domestic circuit, embodying the city’s trademark cricketing ethos of determination and fight.

A right-arm off-spinner and handy lower-order batter, Kotian made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, while his List A debut came in March 2021. Since then, he has grown into a vital cog in the side, particularly known for his control with the ball and resilience with the bat. His performances in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season stood out — he was among Mumbai’s leading wicket-takers and was named Player of the Tournament. Kotian took 29 wickets and scored 502 runs as Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy title in that season. Later in the Irani Cup 2024, Kotian scored a half-century and took three scalps in the first innings and a ton in the second innings as Mumbai won the Irani Cup title after a span of 27 years. 

"I am a genuine all-rounder. I don't think that batting or bowling is my only role. Just because I bat lower down the order, I don't think any less of myself as a batter. In club cricket, I bat at No. 4 and No. 5. Even at Under-19 and junior cricket, I batted at No. 6 or so. Batting at No. 9 for Mumbai is just a function of how deep Mumbai bat," Kotian said about his role.

Notably, the 1998-born player is yet to make his international debut; however, he was first called up to the Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement in the middle of the series.

Kotian made his IPL debut in 2024 for the Rajasthan Royals franchise. However, he played only one game that season and didn't play any IPL games the following year. 

In October-November 2025, Kotian took eight wickets in a first-class match against South Africa A. He credited his Ranji team, Mumbai, setup for his spin bowling improving. “In our team (Mumbai), there are some of the best batsmen against spin. Bowling to them really helps — they guide us on what troubles them and discuss tactics and field placements. Having senior players like Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur makes a big difference,” Kotian said.

Interestingly, the youngster's father, Karunakar Kotian, is also a local-level cricket coach and is a popular figure in Mumbai's tennis-ball cricket circuit. 

Having come through the city’s robust age-group system — representing Mumbai at U-16, U-19, and U-23 levels — Kotian has steadily climbed the ranks. His all-round contributions have made him a mainstay in domestic cricket and a player to watch out for in the future.
