Andrew Tye does not have a menacing pace like Mitch Johnson or a particularly special delivery like Malinga has his yorkers, but Tye has a bag of subtle variations that he uses sparingly against good batsmen to outclass them. His style of bowling comes into the fray when batsmen are in the mood to go big and variations deny them their control over their shots.

Tye has been a latecomer in the cricketing world and made his debut at the age of 26 after earning a national call-up while India were touring Australia for ODIs and T20Is in 2016. His Big Bash performance landed him a national call and Tye debuted for Australia in 2016. Tye was soon found out in the international circuit and batsmen started picking his variations and he could not rediscover another aspect of his game and subsequently went out of favour from the team management.

The seamer made his First-Class debut for Western Australia in 2014 and soon landed in the Big Bash League, courtesy of a contract by the Sydney Thunder. A season later, he shifted his base to Perth to represent the Scorchers in the 2014-2015 season. Tye played a key role in the club’s title-clinching campaign and has been a regular performer for them since then. His performances caught the selectors’ radar but he has been typecasted just as a T20 player.

Initially, Tye was part of the Chennai Super Kings’ setup during the 2015 IPL season, but he had to wait until 2017 to play in the rich-money league. He made his IPL debut for Gujrat Lions and played six games that season. For the IPL 2018, the Australian earned huge as Kings XI Punjab bagged him for INR 7.2 crores. Like other million-dollar buys, Tye didn’t disappoint and had immense success in the IPL 2018 by picking up 24 wickets at an unbelievable average of 18.66.

However, he could not replicate his form next season and could manage only 3 wickets from 6 matches that too with an economy rate in excess of 10 runs per over. The Punjab-based franchise released him ahead of the 2020 IPL auction, as he was picked by Rajasthan Royals, where he has been warming benches due to the truckload of foreign prospects.

Despite facing a low point in his international career during Australia’s transition phase post the sandpaper gate. Tye has added a few more variations and now possesses the ability to rattle any opposition on his day. While Australia would be hoping to use him fully in the upcoming World T20, to be held in the sub-continent, in the later 2021.
