Hugh Weibgen

Hugh Desmond Weibgen is an Australian cricketer who has emerged as a highly regarded young batter through strong performances at the junior and domestic levels. A right-handed batter who also bowls right-arm off-break, Weibgen represents Queensland in List A cricket and is part of the Brisbane Heat setup in the Big Bash League.

Weibgen first gained national attention as the captain of Australia’s Under-19 side at the 2024 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. Leading from the front, he played a key role in Australia’s title-winning campaign, highlighted by a century against England Under-19. His calm leadership and ability to perform in high-pressure situations marked him out as one of the most promising young batters in the country.

His transition to senior cricket gathered pace in the 2024–25 season. In December 2024, Weibgen was selected by the Sydney Thunder as a local replacement player for the injured Tanveer Sangha, bringing him into the Big Bash League environment. He made his BBL debut in January 2025, appearing as a concussion substitute during the Thunder’s match against Perth Scorchers after a mid-field collision involving Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft.

Weibgen’s domestic breakthrough followed soon after. At the start of the 2025–26 season, he made his debut for Queensland in the Marsh One-Day Cup. In just his second match at List A level, he produced a defining innings, scoring an unbeaten 115 from 94 balls to steer Queensland to a successful chase of 322 against Western Australia. Walking in with the score at 4 for 38, Weibgen showed composure well beyond his experience, anchoring the innings and guiding his side to victory.

These performances reinforced his reputation as a batter capable of handling responsibility early in his career. With experience as a World Cup-winning Under-19 captain, a match-winning List A century, and exposure to the Big Bash League, Hugh Weibgen continues to build a solid platform in Australian domestic cricket.
