Katey Martin

A right-handed wicket-keeper batswoman, Katey Martin represents New Zealand Women’s team and for the Otago Sparks in domestic competitions.

She made her Test debut for the White Ferns on their 2003 tour of India. In the only Test match of the tour, Martin played a gritty knock of 46 on a tough Indian condition. However, she failed to capitalize on that knock and couldn’t cement her place in the Test squad.

In the following ODI series, Martin made her debut, and despite playing few ODI matches down the years, Martin was eventually axed from the New Zealand setup due to inconsistent form.

It wasn’t until 2008 that Martin made her long-awaited return to international cricket, but the problem remained the same. Her inability to convert good starts into big scores hampered the New Zealand team. There were few good scores here and there, but there was no significant contribution with the bat.

The attacking batswoman made her second return to the international stage in 2016 and since then has not looked back. 

She was included in the White Ferns squad for the 2018 Women’s World T20, but the whole team performed poorly and New Zealand Women crashed out of the group stage. Martin However, was one of the bright spots for her team, averaging 31.00 at a strike rate of 132.85 across the four matches she played.

In March 2021, Martin became the oldest player to represent New Zealand in a Women’s T20 International.

The wicket-keeper batswoman has played for Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League.

A highly experienced player in the shorter formats of the game, Martin has had a long cricketing journey. Her desire to come back even after so many failures has been applauded by the cricketing fraternities. At the twilight of her career, Martin will look to sign off on a high.
