7:38 AM IST and 10:08 PM Local Time: Desert Vipers have defeated the San Francisco Unicorns by 9 wickets and got a much needed victory. The win was crucial for them to stay in the race of qualification and they have done it. Skipper Shadab Khan led with the ball and his batters did their job in the next innings. Zachary Carter's whirlwind fifty, Saiteja Mukkamalla's anchoring unbeaten 52 and the finishing touch from Rilee Rossouw have taken the team home.
San Francisco Unicorns came out to bat first and the opening pair of Tim Robinson and Connor Esterhuizen put them in a comfortable position early in the game. In the first 8 overs, the Unicorns openers added 64 runs before Esterhuizen (37) became the victim of the Desert Vipers' captain. With Robinson well set and the foundation laid, Unicorns were expected to go at a better rate but they slowed down after the fall of their first wicket. Sanjay Krishnamurthi played a sluggish knock of 15 off 18 balls. Robinson tried to break the shackles but found Nathan Smith off Shadab Khan. He fell for 46 and that triggered the collapse.
Khary Pierre then dismissed Oliver Peake (14 off 9), who was looking good. Zachary Carter bowled only one over and got the better of Hassan Khan (7). Shadab Khan came back again in the 17th over and dismissed Sanjay and Fabian Allen in the space of three balls. From 89/1 to 126/6, it was a complete misery for the Unicorns in the middle overs. Hammad Azam stepped up in the death overs and remained unbeaten on 21 off 13, hitting two sixes and helped his team to cross the important psychological mark of 150-run mark and they finished with 151/7 in their 20 overs.
Shadab Khan shone with the ball when his team needed a wicket. He broke the ominous looking opening stand and took two wickets in the 17th over and finished with 4/13 in his 4 overs. Nathan Smith, Khary Pierre and Zachary Carter got their names into the wicket column.
Desert Vipers sent Zachary Carter to open the batting with Saiteja Mukkamalla in pursuit of the 152-run target and they started the first over taking 11 runs. Saiteja looked good right from the start. Carter was fortunate to get a streaky boundary off Ghulam Mudassar but he tore the latter apart in the third over. Carter took 27 from that over out of which only 5 were from extras. Four fours and a maximum from that over helped Carter to get going. He then took on Hassan Khan for a maximum in the next over and Gideon Peters went for 10 in the next over. Fabian Allen was introduced with the ball in the sixth over and he gave away just one. Desert Vipers put up 63 runs in the powerplay phase and that became decisive.
Carter eventually completed his fifty in 26 balls and before the wrong'un from Anirudh Immanuel knocked over his off stump, he scored a fine 55 off 29 balls. Saiteja found it difficult in the first 21 balls of his innings as he scored just 15 but started looking a tad better afterwards. He and Rilee Rossouw attacked Callum Stow. Immanuel was the best with the ball for the Unicorns. Beside taking the only wicket that fell in the run chase, he gave away just 26 in his 4 overs. Stow conceded 18 in his final over to finish with 0/44. Unicorns brought back pace to get a wicket but Gideon Peters could not remove any of the set batters in the 13th over. Mukkamalla eventually remained unbeaten on 52 off 42 balls and Rossouw played his part with 38 off 26 balls to seal the deal for the Desert Vipers.
