5:00 PM IST | Finally, Netherlands breathe a sigh of relief as they chase down this low total in a cliffhanger to win the match by 3 wickets.
Batting first, UAE were over-cautious and scored just 31 runs in the powerplay. Roelof van der Merwe ended Chirag Suri’s (12 off 20) painstaking stay at the crease in the 7th over. While Suri’s opening partner, Muhammad Waseem, too struggled to time the ball, he did score a 47-ball 41.
Vriitya Aravind (18 off 21) and Kashif Daud (15 off 14) were the next ones to get into the double figures. Losing 7 wickets in the last five overs didn’t allow the team to finish on a high as they were restricted to 111/8 in their 20 overs.
Bas de Leede (3/19) was the pick of the bowlers. While Fred Klaassen scalped a couple of wickets, giving away just 13 runs in his quota, Roelof van der Merwe and Tim Pringle picked a wicket each.
In what looked like an easy chase, the Dutch side didn’t get off to a pleasing start, as they lost Vikramjit Singh, who fell prey to Basil Hameed in the second over. But a partnership of 27 runs for the second wicket put things back in balance for Netherlands.
In the final over the powerplay, good-looking Max O'Dowd (23 off 18) was taken care of by Junaid Siddique, who then pegged the batting side with a double-wicket over (14th over). The Orange Army lost wickets at the wrong time, as they were reduced to 76/6 after 13.3 overs, who were looking comfortable during the powerplay.
It was Scott Edwards and Tim Pringle (15 off 16) who kept their cool to stitch a partnership of 27 runs for the seventh wicket to bring the calmness back to the Dutch dressing room. The latter was cleaned up in the 19th over, and the target reached run-a-ball in the final over as Netherlands needed 6 off the last six balls. Edwards (16* off 19) and Logan van Beek (4* off 4) manoeuvred the field well as they stole the game with a ball in hand.
For UAE, Junaid Siddique was the best bowler, scalping 3/24, while Basil Hameed, Aayan Afzal Khan, Zahoor Khan, and Karthik Meiyappan picked a wicket each.
After witnessing an upset in the very first match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, the eyes were on Netherlands and United Arab Emirates (UAE). And it didn’t disappoint at all. Though for the majority of the match, Netherlands were dominating, UAE came back and gave it their all during the second half of the match, but they couldn't held their nerves to stop the Dutch.
Stay tuned for the presentations!
