Akshaya: 9:33 PM IST! Birmingham Phoenix dominated Welsh Fire for most of the match, and they did well to clinch a 19-run win from it.
Chasing a target of 162, Welsh Fire needed their openers to fire and Hayley Matthews and skipper Tammy Beaumont provided that with a solid 47-run stand. However, once Matthews departed after scoring a brisk 20, it was Rachel Haynes, who played a few big shots but couldn't last long.
Annabel Sutherland (34 off 21) and Beaumont (39 off 34) steadied the sinking ship as the duo added a partnership of 31 runs for the third wicket before the latter fell prey to a smart piece of bowling from Sophie Devine.
Sutherland, who came under pressure to increase the required run rate, failed to clear the mid-wicket fence as she holed out to Ellyse Perry off Georgia Elwiss. Fran Wilson (20 off 12) did try her bit, but with a mountain to climb, she couldn't take her team over the line.
In the end, Fi Morris and Katie George found it hard to put the bat on the ball, with the Welsh Fire finishing up at the score of 142/5 in their set of 100 balls.
For the Birmingham-based franchise, Issy Wong didn't get any wickets but she did bamboozle the batters with her change-ups. Elwiss picked two wickets while Devine and Maqsood scalped a wicket each.
Earlier, Welsh Fire won the toss and invited Phoenix to have a bat first. Skipper Sophie Devine (48 off 25) took the Fire bowlers to the cleaners and provided the team with a great platform despite losing two early wickets.
Devine stitched a partnership of 46 runs for the third wicket alongside Ellyse Perry, who was playing a game after a long break. Perry slammed 58 off 31 deliveries, including ten boundaries.
In the end overs, a few wickets fell, putting a break on the run-scoring ability of the lower-order batters. Sophie Milenoux was unbeaten on run-a-ball 29 while Arlott played a quick cameo of 12 from 7 deliveries and remained unbeaten, helping the side to post 161/5 at the end of their 100 balls.
For the bowling side, Claire Nicholas scalped a couple of wickets, while Alex Hartley, Hayley Matthews and Katie George picked a wicket each!
