10:17 AM IST, 6:47 PM Local Time: That's it. The Test match ends in 4 days with the host nation New Zealand completing a comprehensive 281 run win over South Africa to go 1-0 up in the 2-match series. New Zealand may have lost the toss but have dominated the Test match from the get go and South Africa have been outplayed in all departments of the game in all these 4 days. Lots of learnings for the Proteas going into the second Test match.
Let's recap you as to how things unfolded in these 4 days at the Bay Oval. It was South African skipper Neil Brand who won the toss and elected to bowl first and New Zealand piled on 511 in 144 overs. It was due to a magnificent double ton from Rachin Ravindra who scored 240 and a classy 118 from Kane Williamson who notched up his 30th Test ton. Cameos from Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry also helped power the score forward. For South Africa, Neil Brand was the pick of the bowlers as the skipper picked up 6/119. A couple of wickets for Ruan de Swardt as well.
In reply, South Africa were skittled out for 162 and thereby conceded a lead of 349 runs. Keegan Petersen top scored with 45. David Bedingham scored 32. There were 20s from Moore, and Hamza but nothing substantial to write home about for the batters of South Africa. From New Zealand's bowling point of view, Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner picked up 3 wickets apiece. 2 wickets apiece for Kyle Jamieson and Rachin Ravindra.
Despite having a massive lead of 349 runs, New Zealand opted to bat again. A masterclass from Kane Williamson as he scored an unbeaten 109* off 132 balls. He shattered records as he became the fourth New Zealand player to score centuries in each innings. He notched up his 31st Test ton as well. New Zealand scored 179/4 in their second innings and Tim Southee their skipper declared the innings at the start of Day 4 giving South Africa a mammoth 529 for the win. Neil Brand picked up 2 wickets yet again in the second innings and had 8 in the match.
Chasing 529 for the win, South Africa lost their openers early. van Tonder and Hamza looked good but got out after scoring 30s. But it was David Bedingham who stole the show with his 87 off 96 balls as he was taking the short balls on and took the attack to the Kiwis for a brief moment. Once he fell, the innings was wrapped up soon. Keegan Petersen gave his wicket away while Ruan de Swardt remained unbeaten on 34*. Fortuin and Paterson got to double figures but it was a bridge too far as the Proteas were bowled out for 247 in 80 overs.
Kyle Jamieson was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/58 in 17 overs. Mitchell Santner picked up 3 wickets and cleaned up the tail as he finished with 3/59 in 26 overs. A wicket apiece for Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Glenn Phillips. Kyle could have had a fifer, but Henry put a catch down just before the last wicket eventually fell.
So, New Zealand wins the Test match by 281 runs and takes a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series. Stay tuned for the presentations.
