They beat India Women by eight wickets on the DLS method at the ‘Home of Cricket’ to level the series. In a rain-curtailed fixture, England Women have displayed a solid all-around performance to outplay the visitors.
The rain-curtailed fixture of 29-overs-per-side began after a delay of 4 hours. England Women opted to bowl first and got off to an ideal start. Emily Arlott cleaned up Pratika Rawal (3) in the second over. Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol stitched a 40-run stand for the second wicket before the latter departed on 16.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (7), Jemimah Rodrigues (3) and Richa Ghosh (2) were sent packing cheaply as the visitors were reduced to 72/5 in the 16th over. Mandhana kept going strong before departing on 42. Deepti Sharma (30*) played a crucial knock at the back end of the innings to help her side finish on 143/8.
Sophie Ecclestone (3/27) bowled beautifully for England Women and picked up three scalps. Emily Arlott (2/26) and Linsey Smith (2/28) grabbed two each whereas Charlie Dean (1/31) chipped in with a scalp for the hosts.
England Women got off to a solid start while chasing 144. Tammy Beaumont started positively whereas her partner Amy Jones took her time before getting in the groove. Both played some beautiful strokes and kept India Women at bay. Sneh Rana dismissed Beaumont on 34 to break the 54-run opening stand in the 11th over.
Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt joined Jones and both kept ticking the scoreboard. They were in total control of the proceedings before the rain arrived and halted the play, with England Women well-placed at 102/1 after 18.4 overs. After a short pause, the play began, with the revised target being 115 in 24 overs.
Jones and Sciver-Brunt resumed their knocks for the hosts. Kranti Goud cleaned up Sciver-Brunt on 21 with a peach of a delivery. Sophia Dunkley joined Jones at the crease and both remained unbeaten on nine and 46 respectively to take their side across the line with eight wickets in hand and with three overs to spare.
