10:36 PM IST and 6:06 PM Local Time: It's a new dawn in the England Women camp as the captain and coach duo of Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Charlotte Edwards kick off their partnership with a 3-0 clean sweep against the West Indies. Chelmsford continues to be the fortress for the Three Lions as this marks their 14th win in 16 WT20Is.
Similar to their opponents, the West Indies lost a wicket on the first ball of the innings, courtesy of Lauren Bell's corker, cleaning up Qiana Joseph. Zaida James followed suit as the field restrictions phase progressed. But it was Hayley Matthews who glued the innings from one end.
With the spinners coming in alongside Linsey Smith, Matthews and Realeanna Grimmond kept the scoreboard ticking with occasional boundaries in the middle. However, the plot to bring in Charlie Dean in the eleventh over worked well for the hosts as three dropped chances were followed by a catch that broke the building partnership.
By the next over, Matthews was batting at 48 with the Windies requiring 73 runs from 48 balls. 22 balls later, the game was paused due to a brief spell of rain, not long before the match resumed with 48 needed off the last 26 balls.
Despite a four and a six to start off the resumption, a couple of wickets fell in the 17th over as Linsey Smith was on a hat-trick. Just when the pressure was exerted, Matthews fell prey to it, holing out to long on in the next over for a fighting 71. A couple of wickets fell in the next two overs as England wrapped up the West Indies with a 17-run win, clinching a whitewash at home.
Winning the toss and electing to bowl first in the dead rubber worked well for West Indies as Zaida James and Hayley Matthews, herself, extracted a couple of wickets inside the powerplay. Following a below-par 24-run powerplay, Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt stabilised the stage with a measured approach.
The experienced tag team added 48 runs together before Matthews returned to outfox the Mumbai Indians star. While Any Jones tried to accompany Knight, the usage of spin created issues for the English batting. Despite many false strokes, the pair steered the Three Lions to Nelson before Matthews cleaned up Jones for 22.
Irrespective of the setback, Knight moved to a well-tailored fifty before switching gears and propelling England to a respectable 144/5 in the first innings. Although she was hobbling due to a hamstring pull, she remained unbridled for a 47-ball 66.
Watch out for the post-match presentation ceremony.
