1:52 AM IST & 9:22 PM Local Time: That’s the end of the league stages, and what a dramatic finish we’ve had at Southampton! Southern Brave held their nerve in a tense final set to clinch a thrilling 4-run victory. Jordan Thompson was outstanding with the ball at the death, delivering under pressure to seal the game. With this result, both the Welsh Fire Men’s and Women’s sides finish at the bottom of the points table in this season’s Hundred.
Earlier in the evening, Welsh Fire won the toss and put Southern Brave into bat. The Brave didn’t enjoy the best of starts, losing both openers cheaply — Toby Albert managed just 4, while skipper James Vince followed soon after for 3. Jason Roy, however, looked in imperious touch from the word go, unfurling a flurry of dazzling strokes and clearing the ropes five times. Alongside Leus du Plooy, he stitched together a crucial 55-run stand for the fourth wicket to steady the innings and inject momentum.
Jason Roy went on to register his first fifty of the season, reaching the mark in just 30 balls. He kept punishing the bowlers with ease before a clever slower ball from David Payne brought his fine knock to an end on 70 off 39. Towards the back end, Southern Brave were lifted by handy cameos — Jordan Thompson’s unbeaten 16 off 8 and Craig Overton’s quick 18 off 11 ensured a strong finish. They closed their innings on 167/7 from the allotted 100 balls. With the ball, David Payne was the standout, finishing with brilliant figures of 2/17, while Riley Meredith chipped in with 2/50.
In response, Welsh Fire had a nightmare start to their chase as Craig Overton made an immediate impact with the new ball. Off the very first delivery, Stephen Eskinazi chipped one straight to cover and was dismissed for a golden duck. To make matters worse, Steve Smith followed him back in the final ball of the opening set, departing for just 4. Tom Abell too had a huge slice of luck, as he should have been gone first ball but was put down at cover by Jordan Thompson. The struggles continued with Jonny Bairstow finding it tough to get going, eventually falling for 5, leaving Welsh Fire reeling at 13/3.
The partnership between Tom Abell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore swung the momentum back in Welsh Fire’s favour, with TKC’s aggressive stroke play completely changing the flow of the contest. Abell looked solid but fell against the run of play for 20 off 15, while Benjamin Kellaway chipped in with a valuable 33 off 20 before being removed by James Coles. Kohler-Cadmore, meanwhile, kept finding the boundary with ease and got excellent support at the other end, keeping the chase alive right till the death.
The game went down to the wire, with Welsh Fire needing 18 runs from the final 5 balls. The atmosphere was electric, and the tension was at its peak as fans watched every delivery with bated breath. After striking a six, TKC went for another big one but chopped it back onto the stumps, falling for a superb 84. That wicket proved decisive as Southern Brave held their composure in the clutch moments to clinch a thrilling 4-run victory.
