Having opted to bat, the Stars made a nervy start. Chinelle Henry struck early, removing Rhys McKenna for a silver duck in the second over. The in-form Meg Lanning then edged to first slip and departed for 13 off the bowling of Lucy Hamilton, leaving the Stars at 28/2 by the end of the powerplay. Nadine de Klerk further derailed the innings with a double strike in the seventh over, dismissing captain Annabel Sutherland (6) and Kim Garth (0) off consecutive deliveries. Sasha Moloney’s dismissal for three in the next over left the Stars in deep trouble at 44/6.
Marizanne Kapp, joined by Danielle Gibson, then initiated the recovery. The pair kept the scoreboard moving steadily and denied the Heat any further breakthroughs. Their partnership yielded 73 runs before Gibson fell for 30 in the 17th over. Kapp unleashed an onslaught in the closing overs, finding boundaries with ease as the Heat bowlers struggled for answers. Marizanne Kapp (Player of the Match): "Look, I have some memory from the last season. We knew that if we could bat a bit, it would be easier later. To comeback like that and even with the ball, we did well. Brisbane is a good side and I think this will give us massive confidence going forward.
We have been speaking a lot about fielding in the boundary. Every single game we try to do better in the ground fielding and catching. It was good fun in the middle to have such a great night out here with the girls."
