5:26 PM IST, 7:56 PM Local Time: That’s it. Perth Scorchers Women stay alive in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025. They beat Melbourne Stars Women by 28 runs to progress to the Challenger to face Sydney Sixers Women. Momentum is such a key thing in T20 cricket and the Stars will know it. They suffer their fourth straight loss and get knocked out of the competition.
Chasing 174, the Stars lost Rhys McKenna cheaply on seven inside the powerplay. Amy Jones came out aggressively and joined Meg Lanning, who started getting in the groove after spending some in the middle. Both started building a partnership and kept the Scorchers at bay as the Stars were well-placed at 86/1 after 10 overs.
Alana King provided the much-needed breakthrough for her side by dismissing Jones on 43 in the 13th over to break the 87-run stand. It allowed the Scorchers to pull back things. Skipper Annabel Sutherland (5), Maia Bouchier (2), Danielle Gibson (8) and Lanning (49) fell in a quick succession as the required run rate crept up.
It was too much to do for the lower order. A flurry of wickets at the back end of the innings meant that the Stars ended their innings on 145/9 to fall short by 28 runs. Chloe Ainsworth (1/24), Sophie Devine (2/20), Alana King (2/25) and Lilly Mills (2/19) entered the wickets column for the hosts as they defended the total successfully.
Earlier, Katie Mack and Beth Mooney gave the Scorchers a solid start after they opted to bat first. Both played some wonderful strokes and put 107 for the first wicket. Mack hit a beautiful fifty before getting dismissed on 52 in the 13th over. In the very next over, Mooney fell on 45.
The foundation was laid for a strong finish. Freya Kemp at four came out all guns blazing and made sure that they didn’t lose the momentum. She played a fine cameo of 35 off 19 before getting dismissed in the 18th over. Alana King (10*) and Maddy Darke (16*) remained unbeaten as the Scorchers finished their innings on 173/5.

Beth Mooney (POTM): "Yeah, amazing. I thought at the 10-over mark the game was pretty much in the balance. Not sure what the coaches said, but whatever it was, it worked. The bowlers were excellent after that and kept us in the hunt.
Yeah, I think Chloe Ainsworth has been unreal for us over the last few years. She’s really grown into that role, taking on a lot of tough overs. It’s not easy for a fast bowler to do that all the time. And of course, Meg is a premium wicket wherever you go in the world. She batted really well—if she’d been there at the end, there’s no doubt the Stars would have won. So it was a huge moment to get her out and a great spectacle for the game.
Yeah, the crowds this year have been phenomenal here at the WACA. Can’t thank you all enough for coming out in such big numbers. It’s a Tuesday night, late in the evening, and we still had two and a half thousand of you here. You’ve been unreal throughout the tournament. We couldn’t ask for a better home crowd, and hopefully, a few of you make the trip to Sydney for the Challenger.
