2:23 A.M. IST, 9:53 P.M. Local Time: The game kept ebbing and flowing, but it's Lancashire Lightning who land the final strike! One might feel the early loss of wickets might have hurt the Falcons - Aneurin Donald had very little support at the start.
Matthew Montgomery was handed the new ball earlier today, and he played a pivotal part in the powerplay, keeping things tight. Matthew Jones got the start for the hosts, and while Ben McDermott found the going really difficult initially, he gradually found his groove after the powerplay, and there seemed no stopping him at one point.
Sufiyan Muqeem accounted for McDermott eventually as the latter departed for 68 off 40. Akif Javed took a beating from Shadab going into the death overs as the Pakistan international took the Lancs towards 200. Javed, though, did well to pull things back in his final over, knocking the stumps over thrice to keep Lancashire under 210.
Derbyshire, aiming to keep their 2026 T20 Blast hopes alive, flew off the blocks. Aneurin Donald absolutely tore into Tom Hartley in the second over, taking 22 off it. Wickets kept tumbling at the other end thanks to a certain James Anderson, but Donald just kept going after anyone and everyone.
Thanks to their wicketkeeper batter, Derbyshire got to 68 at the end of the powerplay, albeit having lost three wickets. Montgomery fell four balls later, but the runs kept flowing as Ross Whiteley joined Aneurin Donald in the act. Derbyshire were at 118 for four at the halfway mark, and they had plenty of momentum under their sails.
Donald's wicket at the start of the twelfth over turned the game around. Amrit Basra followed five balls later, and the Lancs managed to claw their way back in the game. They seemed to edge ahead when Tom Aspinwall yorked Ross Whiteley in the 16th over, and were soon down to the tail of the hosts.
Nick Potts, though, held his nerve, used all of his intelligence, took his chances, and took the game deep, running hard and keeping most of the strike. James Anderson pulled things back in the penultimate over with subtle variations in pace and lengths, and 13 were needed off the final over. Potts found the boundary off the first delivery, but once he fell with 7 needed off 3, Derbyshire's hopes of making it to the knockouts were all but done. Blatherwick kept his nerve and got the job done for the Lancs in the end.
