10:36 PM IST and 6:06 PM Local Time: Somerset trounce Northamptonshire in this away fixture by a massive margin of 105 runs. Their stage was set by the openers earlier and the spinners demolished the Northamptonshire batters to bundle them out to 118.
Northamptonshire, the hosts won the toss and sent Somerset to bat first. Will Smeed and Thomas Rew initially saw off David Willey and took the attack on Ben Sanderson and James Sales. David Willey went for 11 in his third over and in the powerplay, he conceded 22 from his 3 overs. But 39 runs came from the other three overs and that made it 61 from powerplay. Somerset were brimming with confidence.
They smashed Calvin Harrison for 17 in his first over and hit a few boundaries to get the score to 104 in 9.1 overs. Thomas Rew played only a solitary ball in the first two overs but outscored his partner Smeed to reach his fifty. He became the victim of Saif Zaib scoring 57 off 30 and the visitors were 104/1 in 9.2 overs. In the next 3 overs, Northamptonshire pulled things back. They removed Will Smeed (48 off 31) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (4) and Somerset were 122/3 in 12.2 overs.
James Rew and Lewis Goldsworthy added 41 runs from 26 balls for the fourth wicket before Rew fell scoring 30 off 20 balls. Daniel Sams joined the crease and it became a one-man show after that. Sams hit the bowlers for fun and himself scored 48 off 16 balls with 4 fours and as many sixes. He and Goldsworthy (19 off 17) added 60 runs for the fifth wicket and Sams scored the bulk of the runs. The blitzkrieg from Sams propelled Somerset to a gargantuan score of 223/4.
For the Northamptonshire, Calvin Harrison picked up 2 wickets for 31 runs. Ben Sanderson and Saif Zaib chipped in with a wicket each.
When Northamptonshire came to bat, they were off to a flying start. Ricardo Vasconcelos and Nathan McSweeney added 49 in 4.5 overs before Craig Overton trapped the latter in front of the stumps. In fact, they were 49 in first 4 overs as Vasconcelos was on his fluent best in finding the gaps. But Craig Overton came to bowl the fifth over and removed McSweeney (14) to make it a wicket maiden over. The momentum was halted and never regained!
Vasconcelos and Calvin Harrison added 16 runs for the second wicket and Lewis Goldsworthy came to bowl the 8th over. Vasconcelos (40 off 23) mistimed a reverse sweep to find Jake Ball at short third in the first ball, David Willey's (2 off 3) flat pull went to Josh Thomas at deep forward square leg in the fourth ball and Saif Zaib's (0 off 2) off stump was clipped off in the final ball of that over. That single over changed the entire complexion of the game. Lewis Goldsworthy did not get any wicket after that and ended his spell with 3/32.
Josh Thomas chipped in then and he just continued what his spin bowling partner started. He kept things tight to check the run flow and wiped out the entire Northamptonshire lower middle order. First, he got Louis Kimber (13) and then in the 13th over, he got the better of Calvin Harrison (18 off 17) and George Bartlett (bronze duck). He came back in the 15th over to dismiss James Sales (8 off 6). He finished with an impressive figure of 4/6 in his 3 overs.
Northamptonshire slumped to 117/8 after the 15th over and Josh Shaw picked up 2 wickets in next three balls to wrap up the proceedings. He picked up 2 wickets for 14 in 1.3 overs and Somerset defeated Northamptonshire by a massive margin of 105 runs.
