3:42 PM IST, 8:12 PM Local Time: The India U19 squad kick starts the multi-format series with a thumping win in the 1st Youth ODI at Brisbane, defeating the Australian side by 7 wickets.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first but struggled to get going throughout the innings. John James scored an unbeaten 77 off 68 balls to take the score to a respectable 225/9 with Henil Patel starring with 3/38 for the Indian bowlers.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi kick started the chase off in style with a couple of boundaries in the first over and hit 38 off 22 balls before Hayden Schiller sent him back in the shed, Ayush Mhatre failed with only 6 to his name and Vihaan Malhotra was quickly back in the hut for 9.
Losing 3 wickets in quick succession, India bounced back without any pressure as Abhigyan Kundu (87* off 74) and Vedant Trivedi (61* off 69) stitched an unbeaten 152 run stand for the 4th wicket taking the team to victory inside the 31st over.
Local boy Charles Lachmund picked up 2/46 in 7 overs and his opening bowling partner Schiller claimed the prized scalp of Suryavanshi. There were glimpses of brilliance with Ben Gordon and John James but there were never enough runs on the board to put any kind of pressure on the Kundu-Trivedi partnership.
The 2nd YODI will be played on Wednesday at the same venue!
