12:27 PM IST and 12:57 PM Local Time : The hosts Bangladesh have started the 2-match Test series against Ireland on a winning note. The margin of the victory is of an innings and 47 runs that implies the dominance of the victory.
Ireland came to bat first in this Sylhet Test. They got off to a good position in the first innings as Paul Stirling and Cade Carmichael registered a 95-run stand between them and both of them got to their fifties. But the issue of them was that their batters failed to convert their starts onto a big score. Lorcan Tucker (41) and Curtis Campher (44) got out and Irishmen were down to 218/6. But the score propelled to 286 and the courtesy went to Jordan Neill and Barry McCarthy who added 30 and 31 runs beside their names respectively.
For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 3 wickets for 50 runs. Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam and Hasan Murad picked up a couple of wickets each.
Bangladesh were high flying right from the word go. Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam registered a 168-run opening stand before the latter got out for 80. Joy was then joined by the veteran Mominul Haque and they again added 173-runs for the second wicket. Mominul got out for 82 but Joy was the one who converted his good start into the three-figure mark. He got to his second Test hundred and didn't stop. He evaded his previous best First innings score of 137 against South Africa in Durban and scored 171 from 286 deliveries hitting 14 fours and 4 maximums.
Things became better for Bangladesh as Najmul Hossain Shanto came to bat and scored at the rate of knots. He knew that he had to score in a jiffy to pile up the lead and before getting dismissed by McBrine, he scored exactly 100 off 114 balls. Useful contribution from Litton Das off 60 runs facing 66 balls took the lead to 301 as Bangladesh declared with 586/8 on the scoreboard.
Matthew Humphreys was the star of the Irish bowling picking up 5 wickets for 170 runs bowling 43 overs. Barry McCarthy took two wickets for 72 runs.
Coming to bat with a first innings deficit of 301 runs, Ireland lost their opener Cade Carmichael early. Andrew Balbirnie didn't come out to open as he had an injury. Paul Stirling and Harry Tector registered a brief partnership but as Stirling departed in the form of a run out on his personal score of 43, Irish middle order fell like nine pins. Lorcan Tucker, Curtis Campher and Tector trudged off one after another and at the end of the fourth day, Ireland were 86/5.
The Bangladeshi spinners were in full of alacrity to end the game early on the fourth day but the Irish batters showed some resilience to delay their defeat. They realised that playing their shots is the only way to stay relevant in this turning track and they did that. Andy McBrine and Andrew Balbirnie registered 66-run stand for the 7th wicket with the Irish skipper getting out for 38. McBrine however scored a fifty but fell into a trap set by Nahid Rana. He scored 52 but after his dismissal, Jordan Neill and Barry McCarthy went honkers and bonkers at the Bangladesh spinners. Their 9th wicket stand was of 54 runs in just 54 balls. Hasan Murad removed Neill on 36 and Taijul Islam removed McCarthy to wrap the innings up with Ireland getting bundled out for 254.
Hasan Murad picked up 4 wickets for 60 runs in 14 overs. He finished with 6 wickets in his debut Test match and this is something that will give him a lot of confidence going forward. Taijul Islam took 3 wickets for 84 runs and Nahid Rana took two wickets.
