8:28 PM IST, 4:58 PM Local Time: Ram Sharma edges it behind and with this, Scotland U19 are all out for 152 inside 45 overs. England U19 have registered a victory by a humongous margin of 252 runs. The English side have now registered their third victory on the trot and are now at the top of the Group C points table.
Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Scotland’s bowlers were left searching for answers as England’s top order and middle lineup combined power with precision on the flat Harare pitch. The Scottish attack found little respite as runs flowed freely throughout the innings.
England’s innings was highlighted by a brilliant knock from Ben Mayes, who dominated proceedings with a powerful and controlled innings, showcasing both timing and big-hitting ability. Mayes got dismissed after scoring a career-best 191 off just 117 balls, peppered with boundaries and maximums to frustrate every Scottish bowler. It became the best-ever score made by an English batter in the Youth ODIs.
He was well supported by Joseph Moores (81), while Caleb Falconer (32) and Thomas Rew (22) provided useful contributions to maintain momentum through the middle overs. Moores and Mayes had a record-breaking stand of 188 runs for the second wicket.
England surged past 300 with ease before a late onslaught carried them beyond the 400-run mark — a remarkable achievement in Under-19 World Cup history. The side ended with a score of 404/6.
Scotland’s bowlers toiled hard but struggled to make inroads. Jake Woodhouse picked up three wickets while Finlay Jones managed to claim a couple of wickets, but England’s relentless batting ensured the scoreboard pressure became overwhelming.
Chasing a daunting target of 405, Scotland were immediately put on the back foot by a disciplined England bowling unit. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the required run rate climbed rapidly, leaving Scotland reeling and unable to mount any sustained resistance.
The side never went for the gigantic target and focused on playing out their quota of 50 overs. The opening pair of skipper Thomas Knight and Theo Robinson added 38 runs for the first wicket. However, after Robinson's dismissal, things started going haywire for Scotland. They collapsed badly and went from 38/0 to 87/7.
The Scottish lower order showed some defiance. The eighth wicket stand between Finlay Carter and Jake Woodhouse added 41 runs in 10 overs. However, it wasn't enough and later, Scotland bundled out for 152 in 44.5 overs. The top scorer for the side was Carter, who made 34 off 55 balls.
For England, Caleb Falconer picked up three wickets while Manny Lumsden and Ralphie Albert took two wickets each.
England now move to Bulawayo for the Super Six stage, while Scotland's progress depends upon the result of tomorrow's game between Zimbabwe U19 vs Pakistan U19.
