10:41 PM IST, Local Time: That’s it. Delhi Capitals make it to their fourth consecutive Women’s Premier League (WPL) Final. First under new leader in Jemimah Rodrigues. Heartbreak for Gujarat Giants as they lose the Eliminator by seven wickets and get knocked out of this year’s competition. The Capitals will now face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on Thursday.
Chasing 169, the Capitals got off to a flying start. Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma came out all guns blazing and scored at a brisk rate. The new-ball bowlers of the Giants went on a journey as the scoreboard at the end of the powerplay read 75/0.
Finally, the Giants managed to break the 89-run opening stand in the eighth over. Georgia Wareham dismissed Lee (43) on her first ball. In the same over, she cleaned up Shafali (31). Skipper Jemimah Rodrigues joined Laura Wolvaardt at the crease and both made sure that the Giants didn’t get back in the contest.
Jemimah scored a quickfire 23-ball 41 before falling with her side just nine runs away from the victory. Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp remained unbeaten on 32 and four respectively as the Capitals got across the line in 15.4 overs with seven wickets in hand. Wareham (2/28) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/33) grabbed wickets for the Giants but they were completely outplayed.
Earlier, the Giants were asked to bat first and they lost Sophie Devine (6), Anushka Sharma (16) and skipper Ashleigh Gardner (0) inside the powerplay. Beth Mooney at the top of the order looked good but lacked support as Kanika Ahuja (6) fell cheaply, with the Giants struggling at 65/4 at the halfway mark of their innings.
Georgia Wareham joined Mooney and both built a solid 61-run partnership which laid the foundation for a strong finish. Chinelle Henry dismissed Wareham (35) and Bharti Fulmali (0) in the 17th over. Mooney though kept going strong and brought up a well-composed fifty. Kashvee Gautam played a fine cameo of 10-ball 18* at the back end of the innings.
Mooney carried her bat as she remained unbeaten on 62 off 51 to take the Giants to 168/7 at the end of their 20 overs. For the Capitals, Chinelle Henry (3/35), Nandani Sharma (2/44) and Minnu Mani (1/23) entered the wickets column. The Capitals conceded 25 extras but thankfully it didn’t cost them as the batters stepped up and chased down the total comfortably to storm into their fourth consecutive WPL final.

Ash Gardner (Gujarat Giants Women Captain): "Yeah, obviously. Probably not the most ideal of starts. I think Moons did a fantastic job to kind of rescuing the innings with Georgia Wareham. You know, we felt like it was enough if we bowled well. But ultimately, if you don't start well, either taking wickets or restricting runs, it kind of brings that team in. They took on the powerplay, that's what they do, that's their ammo and they did that brilliantly today.
[On chat with team at the halfway mark] We felt like it was defendable but like I said if you don't put pressure in the powerplay. It brings the other teams in. We missed the stumps a bit too much. We gave away too many free-hits, they put them away and put the pressure on us.
[On bowling changes] A little bit, we have so many great bowlers in our lineup. Georgia Wareham set the tone with those two wickets. But we were not able to do that for a long time which is disappointing. There's so much to be proud of, getting to finals two years in a row. We had a devastating start to the season. Plenty of positives and learnings to take out of it.
[On the overall journey of the team] I feel this is the most balanced side we have had. I have been here since the start. I have seen the evolution of the players. We have unearthed some of the talents. Anushka Sharma looked at home at 22 years of age. Rajeshwari Gayakwad has been outstanding with her experience. Hopefully, we can keep the core and go further next year.
[On chat with the group to round off the season] Going into the change room, it's been either youth or experience stepping up at different times. So many positives. A different person stood up in every game. So many learnings and positives to take out. You don't want to rely on one or two individuals. I would love to be sitting there on the 5th in the final. But someone had to lose. Plenty of positives, plenty of learnings to take forward next year."

Jemimah Rodrigues (POTM & Delhi Capitals Women Captain): "[Feeling on 4th WPL final] It feels great. This final feels different for sure. With GG, the last 2 games didn't go our way. We lost by 7 runs in the last over but today we won by 7 wickets. I guess if you believe as a team, magic happens.
[On the gameplan] Nothing changed. Even our team meeting was very short today. We just trusted ourselves and trusted each other. When you do things right and stay calm, things fall in place.
[On bowling changes] I think a lot of credit goes to our bowlers. Kappy, I am saying this bowlers won us the game today. They make me look good as a captain. It is easy to set fields but you have to go out there and deliver. Yeah, one more game and we keep the same plans.
[On the batting performance] I think today was a restoration for us. I would just say that. To be honest the way Shafali and Lee batted, if they bat like that as a bowling unit, where do you bowl? I am glad they are in my team. We didn't worry about the scoreboard pressure but we played according to the merit. Happy to be on the winning side.
[On her positive approach] I think I was doing one thing, I was trying way too hard. I didn't even go and practice. I was trying to practice too hard, trying to be perfect. I am happy that it is coming off well. Credit to Wolvaardt, it is not easy to bat on these tracks but for her to bat with such intent and positivity. Yeah, one more game to go and then we will celebrate.
[On rest day] I think it will be super chill. Whoever wants to practice will practice. We have played 3 games in 6 days, everyone is played enough and is well prepared. It's about playing good cricket on the 5th."
