10:12 PM IST and Local Time: That's the end of the fixture. The England Women beat the India Women by 38 runs and go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series. The hosts were completely outplayed by the England Women in this high-scoring affair and all smiles in the English camp as they start the tour on a positive note.
Chasing a mammoth 198, the India Women lost Smriti Mandhana (6) early in the innings. Jemimah Rodrigues playing in front of her home crowd also fell cheaply on four. Shafali Verma played some wonderful strokes and was joined by her skipper Harmanpreet Kaur as both led the recovery work for the hosts. They started building a partnership and stitched 41 between them before Kaur was knocked over by Sophie Ecclestone on 26.
Verma kept going strong from one end and was well-supported by Richa Ghosh from the other end. They kept finding boundaries regularly and Verma brought up her fifty. The required run rate kept creeping up and Ghosh fell on 21 while trying to clear the fence. Verma fell on 52 and it was the end of the road for the India Women as they finished their innings on 159/6 to lose the game by 38 runs.
The England Women bowled beautifully despite the dew coming in at the Wankhede Stadium. Sophie Ecclestone picked up three wickets and conceded only 15 runs in her four overs. Nat Sciver-Brunt, Freya Kemp and Sarah Glenn also chipped in with a wicket apiece as it helped them defend the total successfully.
Earlier, the England Women were asked to bat first and they got off to a disastrous start as Renuka Singh Thakur cleaned up Sophia Dunkley (1) and Alice Capsey (0) in the very first over. Danielle Wyatt was joined by Nat Sciver-Brunt and both led the recovery work. Both played some fantastic shots and kept scoring at a brisk rate to keep the hosts at bay.
Wyatt and Nat brought up their respective fifties. The pair put 138 off 91 balls for the third wicket before Wyatt fell on 47-ball 75. Nat kept going strong from one end and scored 77 off 53 balls before departing in the penultimate over. Amy Jones played a fantastic cameo of 23 off nine balls to power her side to 197 at the end of their innings.
Renuka Singh Thakur was the standout bowler for India Women. She registered figures of 3/27 in her four overs. Debutants Saika Ishaque and Shreyanka Patil grabbed one and two scalps respectively but were on the expensive side. The total was too much for the India Women as they fell short by 38 runs and the England Women get an early lead in the series.
