12:22 AM IST, 7:52 PM local time: The rain had the final say. The match has been called off. Ireland Women have won by 1 run (DLS method). This is the first time that they have defeated West Indies Women in a T20I.
Pulsating action, periodical shifts in momentum, tension simmering all the time, and eventually a dramatic ending which will go down in history. Did we witness a cricket match or an Agatha Christie novel playing out in front of us?
On her 24th birthday, captain Orla Prendergast yet again turned out to be the hero for Ireland. She scored 71* (44) out of the 99/5 that her team put on the board. Gallant in spirit, optimistic in her attitude and crisp in her ball-striking. She came out to bat when the team was 3-2 in the first over of the run chase itself and enthralled everybody with some flamboyant shot-making, almost single-handedly keeping Ireland in the game.
However, one could argue that the most important shot came off the bat of Louise Little. Ireland were behind the DLS par score at the end of the 14th over. Little mishit 14.1 to the boundary and got them a run ahead. It started raining immediately post that and we could not have another ball.
Though, one must not forget the contribution of the bowlers. Ava Canning starred with a mighty effective 4-over spell with the new ball. She got 2/11 and sent the dangerous Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph on their way. Her partner-in-crime Alana Dalzell routed out Deandra Dottin. And to add to West Indies' woes, Stefanie Taylor got retired hurt at the end of the 10th over, leaving them reeling at 57/4 (effectively 5-down). Sprightly contributions from Jannillea Glasgow (26-ball-26), Shemaine Campbelle (21-ball-21) and Zaida James (8-ball-14) propelled them to a fighting score of 141/8. Prendergast contributed here to with 2/26 to her name. Among West Indies' bowlers Shawnisha Hector returned the best figures of 2/21 off her 2 overs.
