1:19 AM IST & 8:49 PM Local Time: A completely one-sided affair in the London Derby comes to an end as Oval Invincibles cruise past London Spirit. They seal a dominant win by 6 wickets with a massive 31 balls remaining.
Earlier in the evening, Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first on what looked like a sluggish surface at Lord’s. But things went downhill quickly for London Spirit as they endured a nightmare start. Keaton Jennings was the first to go for just 5, followed by skipper Williamson himself, who fell for 9. The hosts never found any rhythm during the Powerplay, and things got worse as David Warner also departed for 9 soon after.
London Spirit were in desperate need of a stabilising stand, but the wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Making his debut for Oval Invincibles, Rashid Khan ran riot through the middle order and kept things tight with the ball. Boundaries dried up, pressure mounted, and the highest partnership of the innings was a mere 17 between Ryan Higgins and Luke Wood. The innings never really took off, and London Spirit were skittled for just 80 – their lowest total in Men’s Hundred history. Rashid Khan impressed with figures of 3/11, while Sam Curran backed him up brilliantly with 3/18.
In reply, it was a stroll in the park for the Invincibles. Openers Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye laid a solid foundation before Liam Dawson cleaned up Muyeye for 18 with a peach. Despite a few hiccups in the middle – Jordon Cox struggled to get going and Curran fell after a brief 14-run cameo – the chase was never in doubt.
Will Jacks chipped in with a steady 24 off 24, and the finishing touches came from Sam Billings, unbeaten on 6, and Donovan Ferreira, who sealed the deal in style with a towering six. Oval Invincibles start their season with a thumping 6-wicket win and 31 balls to spare!
