Earlier in the day, Phil Salt won the toss and opted to bat first without any hesitation. The Originals launched the innings in flying fashion, posting 57/1 in the powerplay, Phil Salt (31 off 20) and Ben McKinney (29 off 12) punishing any loose deliveries. McKinney fell early in the fifth set, offering Olly Stone a breakthrough, though the scoring rate remained healthy.
Salt and Buttler added 38 runs for the second wicket before the Originals’ skipper fell for 31. Jos Buttler (46 off 37) and Heinrich Klaasen (24 off 17) forged a vital partnership to rebuild the innings. Klaasen, though never wholly timing his shots, kept the scoreboard ticking before Stone ended his knock against the run of play. Soon after, Jafer Chohan accounted for Mark Chapman, caught superbly by Kane Williamson at extra-cover—yet another momentum check for the Originals.
Just as Buttler looked set for his first fifty of the season, Jamie Overton pulled off a sharp catch off Gleeson to dismiss him at 46—just four runs shy of the mark. Overton struck again, prising out Lewis Gregory with a well-directed short ball. Sonny Baker (Player of the Match): "Massive. Tough start to the season but great to turn it around today especially against a side. Was just looking to bowl fast. Was a bit nervous bowling to David Warner. He is a tough competitor and has been one of the world's best for a long time. Enjoyed the challenge bowling to him.
First game, bowling with the new ball alongside Jimmy Anderson from the Anderson end was pretty surreal. It is what I find fun about the game to be honest. Since I was young, wanted to bowl fast."
