7:04 PM IST, 3:34 PM Local Time: A paradigm shift for the West Indies as they fetch their first victory in the Super Six stages of the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers. We got to see some intent from the Men in Maroon right from the start of the game. Talk about the fielding, talk about the bowling, and then of the batting, the West Indies side have been magnificent in all the dimensions. They defeat Oman comprehensively by seven wickets. This was the first ODI game against Oman for West Indies and the Daren Sammy-coached side emerged victorious.
In the process to tame down a target of 222 runs, West Indies lost Johnson Charles quite early. Despite the jolt, Brandon King and Keacy Carty took their time and steadied the ship when the Oman bowling attack was trying to break through loopholes. An 80 runs partnership followed and then it was Carty who was run-out in a controversial fashion. The bail was dislodged but came off a bit late while the bat was just flirting around the popping crease.
It was followed by another scintillating partnership where skipper Shai Hope (63* off 65) came into the scene and built a 96 runs partnership with Brandon King. The Kingston CC graduated bloke went on to amass a ton while the Windies captain notched up a half-century.
The middle order of West Indies was brilliant in capitalizing on the looseners and finding the boundaries every now and then with time. Nicholas Pooran joined the party after King (100 off 104) was dismissed post his milestone. He ensured no more damage and steered his side past the finishing line with a 39 runs stand with Hope. Bilal Khan and Kaleemullah were the only wicket-takers.
Oman were pushed on the backfoot halfway through the first innings and it was the 85 runs partnership between Shoaib Khan and Surajkumar that revived the innings for the Asian nation. Barring this, there were just three brisk partnerships; 36 runs- between Ayaan Khan and Mohammad Nadeem, 30 runs- between Kashyap Prajapati and Ayaan Khan, and lastly just 26 runs between Prajapati and Jatinder Singh.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Romario Shepherd with the new ball turned out bliss. He initiated the wicket of Jatinder Singh early and Kyle Mayers succeeded in cleaning up stand-in skipper Aqib Ilyas.
The spin trio of West Indies - Akeal Hosein, Kevin Sinclair, and Roston Chase operated in the middle overs, mixed with Shepherd’s odd spells. It helped them drown the Oman side to 116-6 at one stage. Half-centuries from Shoaib Khan and Surajkumar each assisted the Asian side to go past the 200 runs respectable mark.
Shepherd was the peak of the bowler with a three-wicket haul, followed by two wickets from Kyle Mayers. Kevin Sinclair took a lone wicket as well. The rest were run-outs.
