7:42 PM IST, 4:12 PM Local Time: A professional performance from Sri Lanka as they have outplayed the West Indies by 8 wickets with 5.4 overs to spare. They have outplayed their opponents in all facets of the game and remain unbeaten in the World Cup Qualifiers 2023.
Chasing a very gettable target of 244 for the win, it was all about the opening partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne as the duo put on 190 runs for the first wicket. That really killed the contest. Nissanka got to his 3rd ODI hundred and back-to-back hundreds in this tournament. He scored 104 off 113 balls. Dimuth Karunaratne supported him as he scored 83 off 92 balls. Both fell towards the end. In the end, Kusal Mendis got some batting practice and scored an unbeaten 34* off 43 balls while Sadeera Samarawickrama was unbeaten on 17* off 18 balls. 6 extras were given by the fielding side as Sri Lanka romped home to the win.
The West Indies bowlers were under strength and could only get two wickets in the end. A wicket apiece in the end for Kevin Sinclair and Akeal Hosein. Both tried along with the others, but this was a low total to defend.
Earlier in the game, West Indies were put into bat by Sri Lanka and they never got going to be honest. Brandon King went for 10 while Johnson Charles scored 39 off 38 balls. Nicholas Pooran scored 14 while Kyle Mayers scored 18. But it was Keacy Karty who stood tall with his 87 off 96 balls. He was dropped earlier in the day and made Sri Lanka pay. Romario Shepherd chipped in with 26 off 21 balls while Kevin Sinclair chipped in with 25 off 36 balls. 13 extras were given by the fielding side. The West Indies recovered to get to 243, but it was under par.
It was an excellent bowling performance from Sri Lanka with the ball. Maheesh Theekshana was the star with figures of 4/34 in 10 overs. Hemantha picked up a couple of wickets for 49 runs in 10 overs. A wicket apiece for Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Dasun Shanaka, and Arachchige. A great bowling performance from the Lankan Lions. They were disciplined with the ball but were sloppy on the field and would want to work and improve on that going forward.
So, a comprehensive 8-wicket win for Sri Lanka over the West Indies as they remain unbeaten in the tournament. Stick around for the presentations.
