12:23 AM IST & 8:53 PM Local Time: That’s it from St George’s Park! It’s been yet another commanding performance from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The Men in Orange have bundled out their opponents in back-to-back games, continuing their dominant run in the tournament. The fans are buzzing in the stands as their side not only register a convincing 48-run victory but also clinch the all-important bonus point.
Earlier in the day, Tristan Stubbs won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite losing Jonny Bairstow early, Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke came together to stitch a crucial partnership and set a strong platform for their side. It was a belter of a wicket in Gqeberha and the duo made full use of it, adding 116 runs off just 70 balls. The Capitals were sloppy in the field, putting down a few chances and those missed opportunities eventually came back to haunt them in the game.
Bryce Parsons made an immediate impact in his first over, picking up the key wicket of Quinton de Kock, who departed after a superb 77 off 47 balls. Matthew Breetzke fell soon after for 52, as both set batters were dismissed in quick succession, giving the Capitals a brief opening. Jordan Hermann then played a fine and timely hand, scoring 37 off 20 balls to keep the momentum going. His knock ensured the Sunrisers finished with a strong 188/6 from their 20 overs, although credit must go to the Capitals for bowling remarkably well in the death overs.
In reply, Marco Jansen struck early in the very first over of the chase, removing Bryce Parsons for just 1 to put the Capitals on the back foot. Shai Hope looked in fine touch and played some glorious strokes, but he eventually fell in the final over of the powerplay, as Adam Milne outfoxed him with the back-of-the-hand slower ball to dismiss him for 36 off 19 balls. Will Smeed also looked well set and comfortable at the crease, but he couldn’t go on to convert it into a big innings, departing for 35 off 27 balls.
In the second half of the chase, the Capitals completely lost their way as Tharindu Ratnayake bowled with great control and intelligence. The dot balls started to pile up, the asking rate kept creeping higher, and wickets fell at regular intervals under mounting pressure. The batting card tells the story, with just three batters managing double-digit scores. Sherfane Rutherford’s 25 off 19 balls fought hard but ultimately went in vain and his dismissal more or less sealed the game in favour of the Sunrisers.
The Capitals were eventually bowled out for 140 in 18 overs, as the Men in Orange sealed a comprehensive 48-run victory and secured the bonus point. Adam Milne was the standout with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4/25, while Tharindu Ratnayake also deserves massive credit for his miserly spell of 2/15.
