4:40 PM IST | Deepak: The Southern Vipers successfully defend their title, securing back-to-back victories in the Charlotte Edwards Cup in the three seasons so far. The Blaze emerged as an unstoppable force during the league stage of the Charlotte Edwards Cup 2023, blazing through all seven matches with resounding victories. However, their remarkable run came to a stunning halt in the final when they faced the formidable Southern Vipers.Earlier, yesterday, The Blaze won the toss and decided to bat first. They started their innings on a lackluster note as they lost a flurry of wickets in the first half of the innings and were reeling at 53/4 in the 9.3 overs, when the rain god made an appearance, leading to the abandonment of the match for the day.
On the reserve day, Marie Kelly and Sarah Glenn took charge for The Blaze. However, their fortunes did not change, and they could only manage a modest total of 114 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Marie Kelly emerged as the highest scorer for The Blaze, remaining unbeaten with 26 runs.
Chasing The Blaze's target of 114 runs, the Vipers made an explosive beginning with their openers, Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt, displaying a relentless attacking approach right from the first over. The duo made an impressive contribution, accumulating 61 runs without losing a single wicket during the powerplay phase. However, their partnership was eventually disrupted when Sarah Glenn of The Blaze bowled out Bouchier for 25 runs, thus concluding their 67-run alliance.
Wyatt played with authority and went on to complete yet another half-century but failed to carry the momentum and departed after scoring a well-composed half-century. Skipper Georgia Adams and Freya Kemp remained unbeaten till the end and helped the Vipers seal the final by 7 wickets with 34 balls to spare.
From the bowling front, The Blaze were not up to the mark with the ball, leaking runs at regular intervals. Nadine de Klerk, Sarah Glenn, and Lucy Higham bagged one wicket each.
The Blaze fell short against the Vipers' fierce determination and skill, experiencing a humbling defeat in the ultimate showdown.
