10:26 PM IST and Local Time: SoBo Mumbai Falcons win by 5 wickets! This has been a clinical performance with both bat and ball for the Falcons. They overpowered their opposition comfortably and now have taken a huge step into the playoffs. Contrastingly for the Triumph Knights, this tournament has not been kind. They lose their third game on the bounce and now will have to win everything in addition to depending on other results.
The SoBo Mumbai Falcons won the toss and elected to bowl first. They bowled brilliantly well in the powerplay and reduced the Triumph Knights to 29/2 with both openers back in the hut. Suryakumar Yadav looked like his vintage best as he got the batting innings back on track with a 24-ball 48. On a tacky wicket, he used his feet really well and also pulled out the sweep on a regular basis.
He stitched a 56-run stand with Nutan Goel and got the score to 75 before a peach of a delivery from Yash Dicholkar knocked over his off stump. One brought two and two brought a third as the Triumph Knights slipped to 93/5 inside 15 overs with two more middle order batters failing to create an impact.
A certain amount of recovery was made after Nutan Goel found the fence on a couple of occasions. He pushed the score to 122/5 before the stand with Makarand Patil broke. He himself was dismissed in the next over for 34 with the score slipping further to 123/7. A few late order hits from Minad Manjrekar pushed the score to 147/8 in 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers for the Falcons was Prathamesh Dake for his 4-30 in his 4 overs.
The chase was always going to be dependent on the first powerplay. The Falcons got to 49/2 in the first powerplay. Yes, they did lose two wickets but some timely hits from Aditya Tare and Gautam Waghela made sure that the side stays ahead of the required and the pressure never mounts on them.
With a chase so small, Falcons just needed one player to bat through the innings and take them over the line. It was the newly appointed India T20I Captain, Shreyas Iyer who stepped and scored a fantastic 61(36) to kill the chase. He smashed some really good strokes all across the ground and the hallmark of his knock was how early he read the length against the spinners. He had different partnerships of 33 and 25 with Gautam Waghela and Harsh Aghav.
However, the partnership that followed these two pushed the Triumph Knights well out of the game. He stitched a quickfire 44 of just 25 balls with Awais Khan with the latter nailing a couple of lusty blows as well. Eventually the Falcons crossed the line with 5 wickets left in the hut and 20 balls to spare. The pick of the bowlers was Hitesh Kadam for his 2-34. Apart from that no one threatened the batters.
