Hasan Mahmud

Hasan Mahmud is yet another promising fast bowler coming through the ranks for Bangladesh from their meritorious breed of bowlers. Mahmud is a prospect of his country’s age group structure. He is a right-arm bowler who hits the deck hard and has a front-on action. 

Mahmud first entered the domestic circuit and made his first-class debut for the Chittagong division in the 2017-18 season of the National Cricket League, having previously played for the Chittagong Under-16 team. His pace and accuracy earned him a spot on the U-19 World Cup team in 2018, held in New Zealand. The talented pacer finished the tournament as Bangladesh U-19’s second-highest wicket-taker with nine scalps in his six outings. 

After the Junior World Cup, the pacer returned home to make his List-A debut during the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League in February. The pacer took 12 wickets in his List-A debut season and then got selected for the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. He was also part of Bangladesh’s winning team during the 2019 South Asian Games. 

In November 2019, the Lakshmipur-born was bagged by Dhaka Platoon for the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League, where he made his T20 debut. Mahmood flourished during the Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020, where he took eleven wickets to help Gemcon Khulna clinch the title. 

His performance in the T20 tournament earned Mahmud his maiden call-up for the T20I series against Pakistan in January 2020, but he was unable to make his debut at that time. A month later, he was named in the squad against Zimbabwe. The Chittagong cricketer made his international debut in a T20 in the series. He made his ODI debut against the touring West Indies and bagged five wickets in three games. 

Mahmud is a rare Asian fast bowler who is equally adept in the outfield as he is in his fast bowling. He is a bowler who can be used with both the new and old ball. He is a high-potential fast bowler, and Bangladesh’s head coach, Russell Domingo, is in awe of the pacer’s ability to bowl fast, full, and accurately. 

Mahmud’s international journey in ODIs began in January 2021, when he made his ODI debut for Bangladesh against the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Bowling first-change, the right-arm pacer impressed in his very first outing, returning figures of 1 for 40 in 9 overs. His disciplined line and ability to generate bounce made a strong impression as Bangladesh secured a convincing six-wicket win.

Hasan suffered a hamstring injury during a training session ahead of the high-profile home T20I series against Australia and New Zealand. He missed the Asia Cup 2022 after being a part of the initial squad due to a right ankle injury sustained during training. The setback came at a crucial juncture, as the tournament was seen as a key preparation platform ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Redemption came a few months later when Hasan was included in Bangladesh’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, hosted in Australia. He featured in select group-stage matches, with his most notable performance coming against South Africa in Sydney.

During the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, held in India from October to November, Hasan Mahmud was included in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad as a pace option. He featured in two group-stage matches—first against India, where he returned figures of 1 for 48, picking up the wicket of opener Shubman Gill but conceding runs at a higher economy. His second outing came against South Africa, where he struggled for rhythm, giving away 36 runs in 3.2 overs without a wicket. 

His breakthrough in the Test format came during the series against Pakistan, where he delivered a memorable performance in the second Test. At Rawalpindi, Hasan Mahmud returned career-best figures of 5 for 43, rattling through Pakistan’s middle order with seam movement and sharp accuracy. His five-wicket haul was instrumental in putting Bangladesh in a commanding position and marked his arrival as a genuine wicket-taking threat in red-ball cricket.
