Tim David’s sports career is a rare modern cricket story, shaped by multiple countries and formats, and defined by explosive power in the shortest version of the game.

Born in Singapore, Timothy Hays (Tim) David carries both Singaporean and Australian cricketing identities. His father, Rod David, represented Singapore at the 1997 ICC Trophy, and cricket was always part of the household. Although the family briefly returned to Australia when Tim was still a toddler, growing up in Perth allowed him to develop his game within Australia’s competitive system while retaining eligibility for Singapore.

Before making it into the Australian setup, David found himself in demand for T20 Leagues around the globe. His first assignment came for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League 2018/19, and he went on to play in the PSL, the CPL, The Hundred, the IPL, the SA20, and, most recently, Major League Cricket.

So far, he has played for two major teams in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). Making his debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2021, he became the first international player from Singapore to play in India’s most premium tournament.

He went on to play for the Mumbai Indians in the 2022-24 before being bought back by RCB in the 2025 mega auction. Thus, David was a vital cog of RCB’s maiden title-winning campaign in IPL 18.

Tim David T20I Career

Interestingly, Tim David first emerged on the international stage representing Singapore, making his T20I debut in July in the 2018–19 T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier. Over the next year, he played 14 T20 internationals for the country, quickly gaining attention for his clean striking and calmness under pressure. His performances in franchise cricket soon accelerated his rise, and under ICC eligibility regulations, he switched allegiance to Australia in 2022.

David’s international breakthrough for Australia came in September 2022, when he made his T20I debut against India. Just three matches into his career, he announced himself with a blistering 54 off 27 balls in Hyderabad. He was part of the Australian squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup.

A defining moment arrived on 25 July 2025, when David smashed his maiden T20I century against the West Indies. His unbeaten 102 off just 37 balls, featuring 11 sixes and six fours, stood as the joint third-fastest T20I hundred in matches between full ICC members, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most destructive finishers in world cricket.

Tim David ODI Career

Tim David, a powerful 6ft 5in middle-order hitter, made his maiden ODI appearance for Australia on September 9, 2023, against South Africa. But he is yet to prove his mettle in longer formats.

Tim David BBL Career

At the franchise level, David made his Big Bash League debut for the Perth Scorchers on 1 January 2018. His career took a decisive turn ahead of the 2020–21 season when he signed with the Hobart Hurricanes. He made an immediate impact, scoring 58 runs in the opening match of the tournament and earning Player of the Match honours.

His importance to the Hurricanes was underlined in February 2022, when he signed a two-year contract extension, establishing himself as a core member of the side. Early in 2025, he was a part of the Hurricanes side that won the BBL for the first time.

Tim David IPL Career

The Australia’s batter’s first stint in the IPL was Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021, but he grabbed great attention when Mumbai Indians spent INR 8.25 crore to bring him on board in the 2022 Mega Auction.

He showed why he was rated so highly in the first season itself, boasting a strike rate of more than 200, including a match-winning 46 off 18 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, which was his most prominent knock from that campaign. Ahead of IPL 2025, his original franchise re-signed him. However, his performances failed to match the management’s expectations. Despite that, Tim David was retained by the defending champions for the upcoming season.
