Fazalhaq Farooqi is Afghanistan’s premier left-arm fast-medium bowler in limited-overs cricket and one of the most dangerous new-ball operators in the modern game. Renowned for his ability to swing the new ball both ways at pace, Farooqi has become a strike bowler Afghanistan turns to when early breakthroughs are essential. His rise from street cricket to World Cup match-winner is a story of resilience, raw talent, and relentless improvement.

Farooqi made his international debut in 2021 and has since grown into a mainstay across ODIs and T20Is, playing a defining role in Afghanistan’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s Early Life and Background

Fazalhaq Farooqi was born in Baghlan, Afghanistan, into a family of modest means. His father, Abdul Qayum, worked as a farmer, while his mother, Zainab, managed the household. One of six siblings, Farooqi grew up in challenging conditions where access to proper cricketing facilities — and even electricity was limited.

Cricket entered his life at the age of nine, encouraged by his father. With no formal academies nearby, Farooqi learned the game through street cricket and local tournaments, often improvising with limited resources. In his early years, he was an all-round participant, but his natural pace and ability to move the ball soon set him apart as a bowler.

A major turning point came in 2015, when he joined the Afghanistan Cricket Board academy, gaining access to structured coaching and equipment. That opportunity transformed his raw potential into a professional pathway.

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s International Career

Fazalhaq Farooqi entered international cricket in March 2021, beginning a rapid ascent in Afghanistan’s white-ball bowling hierarchy.

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s T20I Career

Fazalhaq Farooqi made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe on 20 March 2021, immediately showcasing his ability to swing the new ball at the international level. Since then, he has developed into a specialist powerplay bowler, trusted to strike early and disrupt opposition top orders.

His defining T20I stretch came during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets. Farooqi was devastating in the powerplay, claiming 10 of those wickets with the new ball. His career-best figures of 5 for 9 against Uganda earned him the Player of the Match award, and he went on to receive additional awards against New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

In T20Is, Farooqi has established himself as a genuine new-ball menace — capable of swinging matches inside the first few overs.

After a brief period out of the squad, he returned strongly and was named in Afghanistan’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, captained by Rashid Khan — a clear vote of confidence in his experience and impact.

Fazalhaq Farooqi etched his name in Afghanistan’s T20I history by becoming only the second bowler from the country—after Rashid Khan—to take back-to-back four-wicket or better performances in T20 Internationals, a milestone he reached during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s ODI Career

Fazalhaq Farooqi made his ODI debut against the Netherlands on 25 January 2022, adding another dimension to Afghanistan’s pace attack. In the 50-over format, he has been used primarily as a strike bowler, relied upon to break partnerships and apply pressure with movement and accuracy.

Farooqi was involved in a widely discussed on-field rivalry with Pakistan’s Naseem Shah during the 2022 Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI series, both of which featured dramatic last-over finishes. In Sharjah in 2022, Naseem hit two consecutive sixes off Farooqi in the final over to secure a one-wicket win for Pakistan and knock Afghanistan out of the tournament.

A year later in Hambantota, a similar situation unfolded, where despite Farooqi effecting a run-out of Shadab Khan at the non-striker’s end, Naseem again struck the winning boundary to seal another last-ball victory. Although these moments were intense on the field, the two players have since shared positive interactions while playing together in franchise cricket, reflecting mutual respect beyond the rivalry.

While his ODI career continues to evolve, his control with the new ball and adaptability across conditions have made him a regular selection option in Afghanistan’s limited-overs squads.

In ODIs, Farooqi offers Afghanistan balance — a seam bowler who can provide breakthroughs in conditions traditionally favouring spin.

Fazalhaq Farooqi IPL Career

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s IPL journey reflects a gradual rise from behind-the-scenes learning to full-fledged participation at the franchise level. While his IPL numbers are still evolving, his path shows how Afghanistan’s leading left-arm pacer has been shaped by experience, exposure, and opportunity.

Before the Afghan pacer made his IPL debut, he spent two crucial seasons as a net bowler, working closely with elite international batters. These stints played a significant role in sharpening Farooqi’s skills, particularly his control with the new ball and his understanding of T20 batting patterns.

The left-arm seamer entered the IPL spotlight in 2022 after being signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Though opportunities were limited, the season marked Farooqi’s official arrival in the IPL, giving him first-hand experience of high-pressure franchise cricket.

The 2023 IPL season saw Farooqi feature more regularly for SRH.He showed glimpses of his ability to swing the ball early, though consistency and sustained opportunities remained a challenge in a struggling SRH campaign.

SRH opted for different overseas combinations during their impressive run to the final, limiting Farooqi’s chances despite his strong international form that year.Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, the Baghlan-born was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 2 crore.

Despite regular appearances in the first half of the season, Farooqi struggled to make a wicket-taking impact, and his high economy reflected the difficulties he faced on batting-friendly surfaces. Later, the franchise released the seamer ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, where he went unsold.
