Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler leaves a distinct mark on the team he plays with, and he has earned a distinguished reputation. Buttler came into the limelight on the back of his ability to hit big sixes and his unorthodox batting style, but over the years, he has developed his game to play to the situation.

He has established himself as one of the building blocks of the current explosive English batting lineup. Buttler has been phenomenal against all teams, all conditions, and in all situations. He is a batsman of MS Dhoni’s mould who keeps it under control even when the pressure during the game notches up to the highest possible points.

A prolific run-scorer and an effortless timer of the white-ball, Buttler is a global T20 superstar and one of the key openers for the Rajasthan Royals. His batting style suits the Royals squad as his ability to recognise and manipulate field placements of opposing teams and score all around the ground has seen him labelled as one of the lethal batsmen of this generation.

Jos Buttler's Domestic Career

Jos Buttler made his first steps in domestic cricket while playing for Somerset in 2009. He made his first-class debut against Lancashire after replacing Justin Langer in the County Championship. 

Jos Buttler’s first century in his first-class career came in his fourth County Championship match. The following game saw him score his first half-century in List A against Sussex.

Jos Buttler T20I Career

Ahead of the T20 series against India in 2011, Jos Buttler earned his first call-up. On August 31, 2011, Buttler made his T20I debut against India at Manchester.

Jos Buttler scored his first T20I fifty for England against the West Indies on September 23, 2011, at The Oval, scoring 52 runs off 35 balls. 

Ten years after his debut, on November 2, 2021, in the shortest format of the game, Buttler scored his first T20I century as England beat Sri Lanka to close in on the semi-finals during their 2021 T20 World Cup group stage. 

Buttler was entrusted with England’s white-ball captaincy in June 2022, succeeding Eoin Morgan. His first assignment was the T20I series against India in July 2022, and he subsequently led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup.

In the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup against India, he scored 80 not-out as part of a record opening stand of 170 with Alex Hales (86*), seeing England to a 10-wicket victory and a place in the final. Eventually, England won their second T20 World Cup title, defeating Pakistan by 5 wickets.

Jos Buttler ODI Career

Jos Buttler made his ODI debut for England against Pakistan in the UAE on February 21, 2012. Playing in Dubai. He had a sedate start to his ODI career, being dismissed for a second-ball duck in his first innings. 

In the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Buttler started the tournament on a great note, but England, sadly, were knocked out early from the tournament. 

Four years later, Buttler, the then-vice captain, played a key role in England winning their maiden ODI World Cup with Jos Buttler at the helm. The dynamic wicketkeeper had a great tournament with the bat. 

In February 2023, Jos Buttler, along with Dawid Malan, set a remarkable record for England in white-ball cricket with a 232-run fourth-wicket partnership in ODIs against South Africa. They also hold the record for the highest-ever second-wicket stand in T20I history, scoring 167 runs against South Africa in 2020.

Jos Buttler resigned as captain during the Champions Trophy 2025. Appointed in June 2022, his tenure included poor performances in the 2023 50-over World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, followed by a string of subsequent losses. His resignation followed England's first two losses in the Champions Trophy, eliminating them from semi-final contention.

Jos Buttler Test Career

With Matt Prior getting injured in the Test series against India on July 22, 2014, Jos Buttler was called up for the England squad for the third Test. In his debut Test innings, the batter impressed everyone with 85-runs knock off 83 balls.

Notably, while Jos Buttler continued to cement his place in the white-ball set-up, inconsistency kept him out of the longest format.

Buttler’s career-saving moment came in July 2020 when he was named in England’s squad for the Test series against West Indies. He was England's stand-out batsman of the summer, averaging 52 whilst notching up 2 half-centuries, and a series-winning 75 in the fourth innings at Old Trafford to save them from certain defeat.

Jos Buttler IPL Career

Mumbai Indians spotted Jos Buttler’s potential before the IPL 2016 and made a bid of INR 1.6 crores for him, during which he played until IPL 2017. A franchise full of star players, MI could not make the most of his talents as he ended up batting with fewer overs left and finished the 2016 season scoring 255 runs from 14 innings.

Another middling season in 2017, followed by his move to the Rajasthan Royals, which unlocked his potential. He was made to open, and he unleashed onslaughts with impeccable consistency, piling up 548 runs from 13 innings in the IPL 2018. 

In the next season, he was more dominating, and by the time he left to join the England team for the preparations of the World Cup last year, he had piled on 311 runs from only 8 IPL matches.

Interestingly, in March 2019, Ravi Ashwin controversially "Mankaded" Jos Buttler during a match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals, sparking a major debate over the "spirit of cricket". While Buttler was out of his crease before the ball was delivered, the action was legal but widely debated.

Ahead of the 2022 season, it was announced that he had been retained by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 10.00 crore.

In IPL 2022, Jos Buttler delivered a historic season for Rajasthan Royals, winning the Orange Cap as the leading run-scorer with 863 runs in 17 matches.

After being released ahead of the 2025 season, Buttler was bought by the Gujarat Titans for INR 15.75 Cr. He was again retained by the franchise for IPL 2026 for a below-par run in the previous season.
