Wellington Masakadza

A crafty left-arm spinner, Wellington Masakadza was born in Harare and he is the youngest of the three brothers, Hamilton and Shingirai Masakadza. All of them having played international cricket for Zimbabwe. He started playing cricket at a tender age and also represented Zimbabwe in the 2012 U-19 ICC Cricket World Cup playing three matches.

On the back of a successful T20 trial, Masakadza was selected in the Mountaineers squad. He made his senior debut for the reputed franchise during the 2013-14 domestic season. He made his first domestic appearance against Matabeleland Tuskers on February 24th, 2014 picking up a five-wicket haul on his debut, and went on to become a ruthless spinner taking 15 wickets in just four matches in the 2013-14 Logan Cup.

Masakadza’s best figure of 6 for 63 playing for Zimbabwe A against Bangladesh paved his path to the senior side in September 2014. The following month he was named in the 17-man squad for their tour of Bangladesh. The southpaw made his debut in the first ODI in Harare on October 9, 2015. Apart from taking 2/45 with the ball, Masakadza impressed everyone with the way he handled pressure in his very first game. 

His domestic first-class records saw him included in the Test squad for the first time in October 2018. The Harare-born all-rounder made his Test debut against Afghanistan on November 3rd, 2018. Playing alongside his brother Hamilton Masakadza, he couldn’t impact the victory as he would have liked. After the Covid-19 outbreak, Masakadza was included in the T20 squad against Afghanistan but could not do impact on the series.

Still just 27 years old, Masakadza has established himself as a reputed spinner in Zimbabwe playing XI and will be looking to undertake cricket in other domestic T20 leagues around the world.
