Bio

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, is one of the renowned counties in England which has been in existence for almost 250 years now, although they were formally established around April of 1841 by William Clarke at Trent Bridge ground, who also became the first official captain of the club and Sir Henry Bromley was elected as the first ever president of the club in 1869. Their first-class debut was against Sussex in 1835 at Brighton.

Notts were a formidable side till the end of the 19th century courtesy of some professionals like Arthur Shrewsbury and Alfred Shaw. The clubs first ever County Championship success eventually came in 1907 as Arthur James led a formidable side which included James Gunn, Wilfred Payton and George Gunn who went on to score over 30,000 runs for the club.

Arthur Carr took over the reins in 1919 and with the services of the talented bowlers like Harold Larwood and Bill Voce along with their supreme batting line up, the club emerged as the County champions in 1929.

Post the Second World War, the side from Trent Bridge had a very lean phase as they struggled a lot in the fifties, until the signing of the Caribbean giant, Gary Sobers in 1968. Gary took the team to a better position along with Max Harris and Barry Stead, Sobers hit Malcolm Nash of Glamorgan for six sixes on an over at Swansea in his first ever season and made it into the record books.

Notts found their lost shine back in the late seventies and eighties as they signed the Kiwi all-rounder Richard Hadlee, South African skipper Pat Rice along with the talented English batsman in Derek Randall. This side was miles ahead of their opponents and they became county champions in 1981 and won the double of NatWest Trophy and County Championship in 1987. With the departure of their stars, Tim Robinson took over the captaincy and along with Chris Broad and Eddie Hemmings, Notts went onto win the Benson and Hedges trophy in 1989 and a Sunday League in 1991.

Nottinghamshire had another dull decade as they were struggling to survive in the first division. In 2004 though, Notts gained promotion back into the first division and in the following year under the leadership of Stephen Fleming they won their first county championship since 1987, they hit rock bottom in the following season as they were relegated. Notts were brilliant in the shorter format as they finished runners-up in the 2007 edition of the Twenty20 Cup final.

In 2008, Chris Read was appointed as captain and Notts came close to winning both County Championship and NatWest pro 40, but suffered close losses to Hampshire and Sussex respectively and came out empty handed that season. In 2010, Notts made it to the Finals Day of the Friends Provident Twenty20 Cup and lost to Somerset in the finals on Duckworth-Lewis method, but Notts got their revenge by winning the County Championship against Somerset by being tied on points but having one more win. In 2013, Read took the green and golds to a YB40 One-Day competition victory as he had some brilliant English stars like Stuart Broad, Greame Swann, Alex Hales and Samit Patel.

Notts were struggling in the longer version of the game later. But they were formidable in the shorter version as Dan Christian led the team to their first ever T20 blast trophy in 2017 by beating Birmingham in the final and also secured the Royal London One-Day cup in the same year. Steven Mullaney has taken over the captaincy since 2018 and has led the team to a second T20 blast success in the 2020 edition by beating Surrey in a rain-affected game.
