Owned by Reliance Industries, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are a highly successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Wankhede Stadium serves as MI’s home ground in the cash-rich league.
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, MI won five titles (It’s pertinent to note that Chennai Super Kings have also won the IPL five times). They’ve featured in as many as six IPL finals, and five have gone in their favour. Also, they managed to win the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013.
In 2013, Mumbai won their maiden IPL title after beating arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final by 23 runs at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
In 2015, they clinched the silverware for the second time against the same opposition at the same venue.
Later, MI developed the reputation of winning an IPL title in every alternate season since 2013.
In the 2017 edition of the league, MI beat Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG) in the final by a narrow one-run margin. In 2019, MI beat CSK in the final again by a solitary run and became the most successful franchise.
In the 2020 IPL edition, they broke the chain of winning in odd years and clinched the title for the fifth time by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by five wickets in Dubai. With this victory, they became only the second team after CSK to successfully defend an IPL title.
'The Hitman' Rohit took over the captaincy duties in 2013 from Ricky Ponting, and from there on, he successfully led them to five titles. Mark Boucher is the head coach of the franchise, with Kieron Pollard serving as the batting coach. The Caribbean star retired from the IPL after the 2022 season.
The Mumbai Indians camp stirred up a storm before IPL 2024. They brought back Hardik Pandya, who played for them until 2021, trading him from Gujarat Titans. Pandya had led GT to a title and a final in his two-season stint.
With Rohit struggling to produce results with both bat and captaincy, Pandya succeeded him as the next skipper, which went on to become one of the most debatable decisions in the history of the IPL.
The Mumbai Indians had a turbulent 2024 IPL season, finishing at the bottom of the points table—a stark contrast to their illustrious history as one of the most successful franchises in the league. Inconsistency, key injuries, tactical missteps, and a lack of form from crucial players defined their campaign.
Following a disappointing season where MI finished last, the franchise made a major coaching change, bringing Mahela Jayawardene back as head coach for the 2025 season, hoping to rebuild their squad and regain dominance.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, the Mumbai Indians strategically retained a core group of players to bolster their campaign.
Leading the list is premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, retained for INR 18 crore, underscoring his pivotal role in MI's bowling attack. Current MI captain Hardik Pandya and India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav were retained for INR 16.35 crore, respectively.
Former captain Rohit Sharma was retained for INR 16.30 crore, ensuring his experience and batting prowess remain integral to MI's strategy. Emerging talent Tilak Varma rounded out the retentions at INR 8 crore.
Notably, MI released several prominent players, including wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, hard-hitting Australian Tim David, and South African Dewald Brevis. The franchise also parted ways with bowlers like Gerald Coetzee, Jason Behrendorff, and Akash Madhwal, along with all-rounder Romario Shepherd. Additionally, uncapped Indian talents such as Nehal Wadhera, Naman Dhir, and Anshul Kamboj were released. These decisions reflect MI's strategy to refresh their squad dynamics and address areas needing improvement from the previous season.
MI entered the 2025 IPL mega auction with a clear objective: to revamp their squad after a disappointing 2024 season. With a purse of INR 45 crore, MI focused on strengthening their bowling attack and adding balance to their squad.
One of their biggest signings was the return of Trent Boult for INR 12.5 crore, reinforcing their pace department. Additionally, they secured Indian swing bowler Deepak Chahar, aiming to bolster their new-ball attack.
To strengthen their spin options, MI brought in New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner.
MI further made some key acquisitions, including hard-hitting Will Jacks and explosive Romario Shepherd.
MI also utilized the Right to Match (RTM) card to retain young talent Naman Dhir, showing faith in his potential. After the auction, MI’s squad stood at 23 players, including 8 overseas stars, aligning with IPL regulations.
