Punjab Kings (PBKS) are a popular club based from Punjab. One of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, Punjab Kings, were formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). The team name was changed to Punjab Kings in February 2021.
Punjab Kings play their home matches at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur and the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul jointly own the franchise. PKSB has made only two playoff appearances in 13 seasons.
The franchise had a bagger of a season in 2014, where they finished as runners-up. Interestingly, it was the first and only season where they reached the final of the IPL.
Under the astute leadership of George Bailey, PBKS played a fantastic brand of cricket. Glenn Maxwell had one of the best seasons, where he finished third on the most runs tally with 552 runs off 16 outings.
Maxwell was well aided by David Miller, Virendra Sehwag, Wriddhiman Saha and Manan Vohra. Meanwhile, Sandeep Sharma was their best bowler in that season, returning with 18 wickets in just 11 matches. Axar Patel (17), Mitchell Johnson (17) and Rishi Dhawan (13) also contributed nicely with the ball.
Despite scoring 199/4 in the final, thanks to Saha’s breathtaking 55-ball 117*, Kolkata Knight Riders went on to chase the target with three balls remaining.
Ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season, the Punjab Kings made bold retention decisions, choosing to retain only two uncapped players –Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh.
This approach left them with the largest purse among franchises, exceeding INR 100 crore, providing significant flexibility in the upcoming mega auction. Additionally, PBKS holds four Right-to-Match (RTM) options, allowing them to potentially reacquire key players during the auction.
In the 2025 IPL mega auction, the PBKS adopted an aggressive strategy to revamp their squad, leveraging their substantial auction purse. A marquee acquisition was Shreyas Iyer, secured for a record INR 26.75 crore. Later, the franchise named the reigning IPL-winning captain as its skipper.
Furthermore, PBKS invested INR 18 crore each in two key players – Arshdeep Singh and veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.
To strengthen their all-round capabilities, PBKS signed Marcus Stoinis for INR 11 crore and Marco Jansen for INR 7 crore.
Under the guidance of new head coach Ricky Ponting, PBKS's auction strategy reflects a clear intent to build a balanced and competitive squad, blending experienced internationals with emerging talents.
