Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are one of the two newly-introduced clubs in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 2022 edition of the IPL was LSG’s inaugural season. The Lucknow-based franchise is owned by Sanjiv Goenka's RPSG group, which previously owned the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) for two seasons - 2016 and 2017.

The RPSG group purchased the franchise for a whopping INR 7,090 crore. They drafted three players from the auction pool ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022 - KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis and young legspinner Ravi Bishnoi. Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium serves as the home ground for the Lucknow-based franchise.

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, LSG picked up Quinton de Kock, the South African wicketkeeper-batter for INR 6.75 crore, and Manish Pandey, the experienced Indian middle-order batter, for INR 4.60 crore.

Young Indian pace bowler Avesh Khan was bagged for a massive INR 10 crore. Krunal Pandya and Jason Holder both were purchased for more than INR 8 crore.

Andy Flower was the head coach of the Uttar Pradesh-based franchise. They also roped in Gautam Gambhir, the two-time IPL-winning captain for KKR, as the team's mentor. In addition, Vijay Dahiya and Andy Bichel served as assistant and bowling coaches, respectively.

At the end of the league stage in IPL 2022, LSG were third in the points table, bagging 16 points from 14 matches. Unfortunately, they were knocked out by RCB in the Eliminator.

Ahead of the 2023 IPL auction, LSG snapped a few interesting names - Nicholas Pooran, Daniel Sams, Amit Mishra, Prerak Mankad, Romario Shepherd, and Naveen-ul-Haq. Pooran, the former West Indies captain, was their highest buy for INR 16 crore.

LSG did well by reaching the playoffs in IPL 2023, though their captain Rahul got ruled out midway through the tournament due to an injury. Krunal led the team in Rahul’s absence. LSG got eliminated after losing to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator.

They had a rollercoaster IPL 2024 campaign, finishing seventh with an even split of 7 wins and 7 losses. Despite a promising start, inconsistency plagued their season, leading to their first-ever failure to reach the playoffs since their debut in 2022. KL Rahul led from the front with 520 runs, but his strike rate faced criticism in a high-scoring season.

Nicholas Pooran was a standout performer, delivering explosive knocks, while young pacer Mayank Yadav turned heads with his sheer pace before an unfortunate injury cut his season short. However, crushing defeats, including a humiliating 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, exposed LSG’s weaknesses, prompting a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2025 season.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, LSG made bold decisions, releasing several big names, including KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, and Krunal Pandya, signalling a fresh start.

They retained a core group of five players, including Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mayank Yadav, ensuring a solid mix of firepower and young Indian talent.

The auction saw LSG making history by acquiring Rishabh Pant for a record-breaking INR 27 crore, making him the most expensive player ever in an IPL auction. Pant was also named the new captain, marking a new era for the franchise.

Alongside him, LSG brought in key names like Avesh Khan, David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram while strengthening their bowling attack with young and experienced talents.

With Pant at the helm and a revamped squad, LSG is set for an aggressive, fearless approach in IPL 2025. Under the guidance of new head coach Zaheer Khan, the franchise will aim to reclaim its playoff spot and finally push for its maiden IPL title, banking on a dynamic mix of experience and emerging talent.
