Bio

The India men's national cricket team, governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is a full-member of the International Cricket Council, having Test, ODI and T20I status.

The origins of the sport were laid in the country by the Britishers in the 1700s. The Oriental Cricket Club, formed by the Parsi community, was the first of its kind to be established by the Indians in 1848.

After joining the Imperial Cricket Council, now known as the International Cricket Council, in 1926, India debuted in Test format versus England in 1932. Under the captaincy of CK Nayudu, the side made its first international tour for the one-off Test that it lost by 158 runs.

India's first series as a host came in 1933 as England was the visiting team this time around. The touring team achieved a cleansweep by winning both the ties.

Team India attained its first Test match victory against England in 1952. Also, its first Test series win came in the same year versus Pakistan.

While the side progressed steadily as a red-ball outfit, becoming a formidable force at home, it was not until 1983 that they started to taste success in ODI cricket.

As Kapil Dev's men lifted the 1983 World Cup trophy, defeating favourites West Indies at Lord's, it marked the watershed moment in the history of Indian cricket.

However, it took another 28 years for the next World Cup triumph for India as MS Dhoni and Co. brought home the trophy after beating Sri Lanka in the tournament's final at the Wankhede Stadium.

In between, India won the 1985 Benson Hedges World Championship of Cricket and the 2007 T20 World Cup. The side was joint-winners of the 2002-03 Champions Trophy along with Sri Lanka and again repeated its heroics in the 2013 edition of the competition.

Regarded as the No. 1 Asian team, India have won the Asia Cup on seven occasions (1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2023).
