Gujarat Giants is a Gujarat-based franchise in the Women's Premier League (WPL). Adani Sportsline acquired it for a staggering INR 1,289 crores. Apparently, they were the only group to shell out more than 1,000 crores in the WPL auction.
Rachael Haynes, the former Australian batter, was the head coach of the franchise in the 2023 WPL season. Mithali Raj, the legendary India skipper and batter, is Gujarat Giants’ mentor. Tushar Arothe is in the capacity of batting coach, while Nooshin Al Khadeer is the bowling coach. Gavan Twining takes care of the team as fielding coach.
Gujarat Giants managed to secure the services of overseas stars Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney and Deandra Dottin in the WPL 2023 auction. Their top Indian recruits are Harleen Deol, Sneh Rana and Sabbhineni Meghana.
In their WPL 2023 opener, Gujarat Giants suffered a big blow as their captain, Mooney, sustained an injury and was eventually ruled out of the tournament. Rana donned the captain's hat from thereon. Mooney missing out on the competition turned out to be destructive for Gujarat Giants, who finished with the wooden spoon.
Leading up to the WPL 2024 auction, Gujarat Giants released 11 players, accounting for more than half of their squad. Their released list had four overseas players, namely Annabel Sutherland, Kim Garth, Georgia Wareham and Sophia Dunkley.
Entering the auction with a big purse, Gujarat Giants spent a combined INR 4.5 crore on Phoebe Litchfield, Meghna Singh, Trisha Poojitha, Kashvee Gautam, Priya Mishra, Lauren Cheatle, Kathryn Bryce, Mannat Kashyap, Tarannum Pathan, and Veda Krishnamurthy.
However, Kashvee, WPL's most expensive uncapped player, who was purchased for a whopping INR 2 crore, was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Sayali Satghare was named Kashvee’s replacement. Moreover, Cheatle also withdrew from WPL 2024, prompting the franchise to rope in New Zealand’s Lea Tahuhu.
Gujarat Giants also signed up Michael Klinger as their new head coach, but Gujarat Giants once again finished at the bottom of the points table in WPL 2024, securing just two wins from eight league matches. Batting let them down big time in the tournament, with only captain Beth Mooney managing to make any noteworthy impact during their dismal campaign.
On a trail of two unwanted cellar-dweller campaigns in succession, the Gujarat Giants Women’s franchise nabbed uncapped Indian star Simran Shaikh on the day of the WPL 2025 auction later that year. Furthermore, the franchise got hold of Prakashika Naik and England’s fast-bowling all-rounder Danielle Gibson. The franchise additionally shelled out a staggering sum of Rs.1.7 crores to acquire the services of legendary West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin.
With four fresh recruitments, Gujarat Giants also made several retentions in the lead-up to the auction in the form of Beth Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt, Phoebe Litchfield, Ashleigh Gardner, and Harleen Deol, among others.
In a bid to reverse its dwindling fortunes, the Gujarat Giants management appointed Australian all-rounder and franchise zealot Ashleigh Gardner as the new captain of the team for WPL 2025.
With a new leader and a wealth of international experience in the form of Beth Mooney, Laura Wolvaardt and Deandra Dottin in its ranks, it remains to be seen how the Gujarat Giants Women’s team will fare in the third edition of India’s prestigious T20 tournament.
