Based in Mumbai, the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise features as one of the five teams in the Women's Premier League (WPL). The multi-national conglomerate Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries bought the rights to the franchise for a whopping INR 912 Crores.
Charlotte Edwards, the legendary England cricketer, dons the head coach role for MI. The highest wicket-taker across Women's ODIs, Jhulan Goswami, is the team’s mentor.
MI Women management bought 17 players in the WPL 2023 auction. They went all in for India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who led them in the inaugural WPL season.
The prominent overseas players Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr were key to the team's prospects in WPL 2023. As they shone brightly in the season, along with most of the MI players who chipped in throughout the tournament, the side won the title, carrying forward the legacy of their men's team. Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals to lift the trophy, becoming the inaugural WPL champions.
Ahead of the WPL 2024 auction, MI released four players, namely Heather Graham, Dhara Gujjar, Sonam Yadav and Neelam Bisht. They added Shabnim Ismail, S Sajana, Amandeep Kaur, Fatima Jaffer and Keerthana Balakrishnan for the second WPL season.
With their core intact, Mumbai Indians Women hoped for a successful title defence. Unfortunately for the defending champions, the team failed to go past RCB in the Eliminator despite finishing number two on the WPL 2024 points table with five wins and just three defeats.
In spite of undergoing a disappointing season, the Mumbai Indians franchise decided to stick with most cricketers from their core squad by holding on to 15 players, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
Apart from Harmanpreet, the franchise retained the likes of New Zealand’s T20 World Cup winner Amelia Kerr, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, and Indian all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar. The management released four players, including England’s Issy Wong, and walked into the WPL 2025 auction with a purse of ₹ 2.65 crore.
Making good use of its financial reserves at the bidding event, the Mumbai Indians franchise acquired uncapped Indian stars G Kamalini, Akshita Maheshwari, Sanskriti Gupta, as well as South African all-rounder Nadine de Klerk.
Having undergone a semi-revamp in the lead-up to the WPL 2025 season, Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians drawcards will be aiming to recreate the opulence of their inaugural season’s success to revert to its glory days.
