Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women are among the five teams participating in the Women's Premier League (WPL). The other four are Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals.
RCB are owned by Diageo, a multi-national alcoholic beverage company who are also the majority shareholders of RCB in the Men's IPL. The firm eclipsed nine bidders while spending a whopping INR 901 crores to acquire the franchise.
Ben Sawyer donned the role of head coach of the RCB Women's team in the inaugural edition of the tournament. His assistant, Malolan Rangarajan, served as the Head of Scouting.
The Bangalore-based franchise acquired 18 players in the WPL 2023 auction, including top Indian players Smriti Mandhana, Renuka Singh and Richa Ghosh. At the same time, the key foreign recruits were Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry and Heather Knight.
On February 18, opening batter Mandhana was announced as the RCB captain for the 2023 edition.
While the franchise entered the tournament as the favourites, they finished second-last on the points table, much to the gloom of their fans. Mandhana, who herself was troubled by poor form throughout the competition, could lead the side to only two wins in eight games.
Ahead of the WPL 2024 auction, RCB released seven players from their contingent, including foreign talents Megan Schutt and Dane van Niekerk. Mandhana, however, was retained as the captain.
In the WPL 2024 auction, RCB bolstered their squad, splurging INR 2.3 crore. The new additions were Ekta Bisht, Kate Cross, Georgia Wareham, Sabbineni Meghana, Simran Bahadur, Sophie Molineux and Shubha Satheesh. As Heather Knight pulled out of the 2024 season, RCB replaced her with Nadine de Klerk. Kanika Ahuja, too got injured and had to be substituted with Shraddha Pokharkar.
RCB have also made a change in their support staff, with Luke Williams replacing Sawyer as the head coach.
As it turned out, the aforementioned changes and adjustments ended up constituting an RCB squad that went on to lift the WPL 2024 title by defeating table-toppers Delhi Capitals in the final. Under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, the RCB franchise secured four wins and sustained four defeats to finish third on the WPL 2024 standings and toppled defending champions Mumbai Indians in a high-octane Eliminator. RCB also trounced Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in a one-sided finale as the franchise lifted its first-ever silverware (men or women).
Australian all-rounder Sophie Molineux won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the final. Ellyse Perry and Shreyanka Patil, on the other hand, finished the tournament as its leading run-maker and wicket-taker, respectively.
Ahead of the WPL 2025 auction later that year, the RCB franchise released seven cricketers, including overseas stars Heather Knight and Nadine de Klerk. The franchise also retained 13 members from the 2024 winning team, including captain Mandhana, fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur among others; and traded in Danni Wyatt-Hodge from UP Warriorz.
On the day of the WPL 2025 auction, the RCB management recruited four fresh faces into its setup in the form of Prema Rawat, Joshitha V J, Raghvi Bist and Jagravi Pawar.
However, mere weeks prior to the launch of the WPL 2025 season, the RCB franchise signed Australian fast bowling all-rounder Heather Graham in place of legendary New Zealander Sophie Devine, who withdrew from the tournament. Kim Garth was also announced as the season’s replacement for English pacer Kate Cross. England spinner Charlie Dean joined RCB’s title-defence campaign a month before WPL 2025 after Sophie Molineux was ruled out of the season due to an injury.
Following a series of retentions, new recruitments, replacement signings and a few releases, it remains to be seen if Mandhana-led RCB will be able to repeat its title-winning success in WPL 2025.
