UP Warriorz are one of the five teams in the Women's Premier League (WPL). The franchise represents the most populous state of India, Uttar Pradesh. Capri Global Holdings acquired the franchise for a massive INR 757 crores. Their logo comprises four primary parts - a shield, sword, wings and the bird Sarus crane.
Jon Lewis, the current head coach of the England Women's team, also serves as the head coach of UP Warriorz. Former India captain Anju Jain is Lewis’ deputy in an experienced coaching staff.
Former Australia speedster Ashley Noffke is the franchise's bowling coach, while ex-Railways captain Abhay Sharma is the fielding coach. In addition, Lisa Sthalekar, the renowned commentator and former Australia Women's captain, dons the role of mentor for the UP-based franchise.UP Warriorz bought proven overseas players in the 2023 WPL auction - Alyssa Healy, Sophie Ecclestone, Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Devika Vaidya were their Indian picks.
On February 22, 2023, the team management named Healy as their captain.
The side won four of their eight games in the 2023 WPL league stage and finished third on the points table. They entered the playoffs before losing to Mumbai Indians in Eliminator 1.McGrath and Ecclestone were their star performers with the bat and ball, respectively, finishing the season with 302 runs and 16 wickets.
Prior to the WPL 2024 auction, they released four players, including Shabnim Ismail. They made five additions in the bidding war for the 2024 season, snapping up Danni Wyatt, Vrinda Dinesh, Saima Thakor, Poonam Khemnar and Gouher Sultana.
They had to further tweak their squad as Lauren Bell withdrew from the tournament. Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu was announced as her replacement.
Having done well in the previous season, UP Warriorz wanted to cross the playoff hurdle in 2024 and win the coveted title. However, the UP Warriorz Women failed to qualify for the playoffs this time around, as they registered just three wins from eight league matches to finish fourth on the WPL 2024 points table. Amidst their dismal campaign, senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma bagged the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award for her stellar show with both bat and ball throughout the season.
Apart from Deepti, only Grace Harris and captain Alyssa Healy managed to mint over 150 runs among all Warriorz players in WPL 2024. While Deepti Sharma also led Warriorz’ spin arsenal alongside England’s Sophie Ecclestone, the fast-bowling attack of the team lacked serious teeth as not a single pacer managed to pick up over three wickets throughout the season.
Nonetheless, the UP Warriorz management retained several of its core members later that year, with captain Alyssa Healy, Deepti Sharma, Grace Harris, Sri Lankan legend Chamari Athapaththu, Tahlia McGrath and Sophie Ecclestone, among several others, once again finding a place in the team for WPL 2025. The franchise, however, traded out Danielle Wyatt-Hodge to RCB during the pre-season trade window.
On the day of the WPL 2025 auction, the UP Warriorz franchise acquired uncapped Indian stars Arushi Goel and Kranti Goud, as well as Australia’s spin sensation and T20 World Cup winner Alana King.
Mere days before the launch of the WPL 2025 season, captain Alyssa Healy opted herself out of the tournament, prompting the franchise to promote Deepti Sharma as the new skipper instead. The Warriorz also roped in West Indies all-rounder Chinelle Henry as a replacement for Healy as the franchise places its bid to clinch its maiden WPL silverware in 2025.
