The New Zealand national cricket team is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is governed by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
A country where rugby is widely popular and a preponderant sport, cricket gained recognition as the national side after the players participated in its first Test series in 1930 versus England. While the period from its debut Test to its first win accounted for 26 years, it took about 40 years to attain a series win as they defeated Pakistan 1-0 in 1969-70.
The first evidence of cricket played in New Zealand was reported in 1832 by Henry Williams, who wrote about boys playing the sport at Horotutu Beach in his diary. As per The Wellington Spectator, the first recorded game of cricket in New Zealand was played between a red and blue team from the Wellington Club in 1842.
New Zealand played its first ODI against Pakistan which was won by the former by a margin of 22 runs. Marking its T20I debut, the team lost to Australia by 44 runs.
Nicknamed the Blackcaps, New Zealand's major triumphs in ICC events have come against India. The side won the 2000 Knockout Trophy, now known as Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship 2019-21 by defeating India in the finals of both tournaments.
