4:59 PM IST | England are alive in the tournament as they beat New Zealand by 20 runs in a massive contest here at the famous Gabba!
Coming into the run chase of 180, New Zealand didn’t start well as they lost both of their openers, Devon Conway and Finn Allen, quickly inside the powerplay. Kane Williamson and the hero from the last match, Glenn Phillips (62 off 36), stitched a partnership of 91 runs for the third wicket. To be exact, it was the latter who was smashing the English bowlers all around the park while Williamson (40 off 40) was holding an end up. Ben Stokes broke this stand by dismissing the Kiwi skipper in the 15th over to put the pressure back on New Zealand.
Once they lost their captain, New Zealand lost their way, irrespective of the big hitters Jimmy Neesham and Daryl Mitchell. Both these batters came and went in no time as Glenn Phillips felt the pressure at the other end of needing 49 off 18 balls. But it was too much for anybody to ask for, and nothing different for Phillips as well. He fell in the 18th over, and with that, it was pretty much done and dusted. Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner did hit a few runs, but that could only reduce the margin of the defeat as England restricted the Blackcaps to 159/6 in their allotted 20 overs. For England, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes scalped a couple of wickets, while Mark Wood and Ben Stokes picked one wicket each.
Earlier in the match, England won the toss and opt to bat first. Jos Buttler and Alex Hales started off cautiously and slowly lifted their run rate via a few delicious strokes around the Gabba. The duo smashed 81 runs for the first wicket, and it needed Mitchell Santner's sharp turn to break this partnership as Hales (52 off 40) was stumped in the 11th over. While Buttler stood tall and played a captain’s knock, wickets fell regularly at the other end.
Apart from Liam Livingstone (20 off 14), no one stretched their hand towards Buttler (73 off 47) as they posted 179/6 in their allotted 20 overs. For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson, despite being expensive, scalped a couple of wickets. While pacers were being thrashed by the English batters, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi were economical, besides picking a wicket each.
With this win, England move to the second spot in the points table and the pressure is on Australia now as they need a bigger win against Afghanistan in their final group game.
Stay tuned for the presentations!
