As the records suggest, the history of cricket in Pakistan dates back to the pre-independence era with the first international match played at Karachi in 1935 between Sindh and Australia.
The Pakistan national cricket team originated after the country attained independence. Given the status of a full-member nation by the International Cricket Council, Pakistan played its first Test match versus India in Delhi.
The team is regulated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) which governs all cricket-related activities. After India sent a recommendation of their Test status, Pakistan was handed the same in 1952. Abdul Hafeez Kardar was the Pakistan cricket team's first captain.
Their major highlight in the sport came in the form of the 1992 World Cup which saw the Imran Khan-led underdogs forge a triumph. Their next success arrived in the T20 format as they lifted the 2009 World Cup trophy. In another great achievement, they won the 2017 Champions Trophy, beating India in the final of the tournament.
Pakistan had the hosting rights for the 1987 and 1996 Cricket World Cup. After terrorism halted the hosting of sporting events in the nation for a lengthy period, UAE was picked as their home ground.
However, the likes of West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Australia have toured Pakistan recently, marking the homecoming of cricket in the country.
